Don't forget the WASPs ("Women Air Force Service Pilots") and the WAVES ("Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service"-worst name evah!) An entire generation of women ran a country, and thought of themselves as being at war. It wasn't a "look," it was a way of life. (In Canada, one air-yard was turning out a Lancaster bomber every single day. Seven years of living like that is so not a fashion statement.)
