Can I just say how frightening I find the Republican convention?

Open religious hatred and chants of "USA" that sound angry rather than proud. I am sincerely, sincerely, completely creeped the fuck out by this. I wish I didn't think it sounded high strung when I say I feel unsafe listening to this shit.

The chants of USA sound more like Sieg Heils to me.

Yeah.

Did you hear Mitt Romney say "radical Islam is evil"? Freaked me out. Everoyne cheered. And I think they would have even if he hadn't said "radical"

I did, but what freaked me out even more was Rudy's comment about Islamic Terrorism.

This whole thing is scaring the shit out of me.

*nods*

I can't begin to imagine what it's like to be Muslim and living here now. The hardcore Republicans don't like people like either of us, but they also have a specific enemy group that they've decided is evil with the big E, and that's really scary stuff.

I turned to my friend D who was watching with me and said "Imagine how the muslims in the audience feel" and then in unison we said "Oh wait, there aren't any!"

*$%@ scary doesn't even cover it.

My father in law grew up in Nazi Germany (he was 3 when Hitler came to power, and escaped from East Germany to West Germany as a teenager).

He's incredibly freaked out by the Republicans for the last 8 years or so. And he used to vote Republican for most of the time he's been an American citizen (he came here in 1957).

When he says something reminds him of the Nazis, my blood runs cold. He's said it to me of numerous behaviours the Republicans have been enacting. It's really really scary.

With obviously less cred (our family came here long before the war), this is the reaction I keep having too.

It's like a friend of mine who is afraid of German Shepards. She wonders if experience is meaningless and time is just a big ball of stuff and if being Jewish just means being afraid of that sort of dog no matter what.

Yeah.

Thing is... he's not Jewish. They have documents back to the 17th century (not forged) that prove the Aryaness of my husband's genetic line.

It's fun! We all take great pride in the fact that my marriage to [livejournal.com profile] midnightstation is a great big FUCK YOU to Hitler and his eugenics program. I mean, what's a nice Aryan boy like him doing married to a Black-Irish-Native American-Jew anyway?! (Ans: Diversifying the gene pool kthnx!)

It creeps me out because my FIL is very... even. He is not given to hyperbole in the slightest. He sees things quite clearly and calmly, and is a very mellow man, who usually can argue why something isn't as bad as one might think. So, when he says something is Nazi like? My ears prick up. Cause he would never ever say it lightly. :(

For what it's worth, I'm Jewish. Anti-Semitism scares me a lot, and I'm kind of twitchy about Christianity. However, I don't have a problem with German Shepherds.

I found that I could tone down my fear of anti-semitism by outsourcing it. I don't have to be hypervigilant because there are plenty of other people keeping track. They'll tell me if things start to go bad.
