Can I just say how frightening I find the Republican convention?

Open religious hatred and chants of "USA" that sound angry rather than proud. I am sincerely, sincerely, completely creeped the fuck out by this. I wish I didn't think it sounded high strung when I say I feel unsafe listening to this shit.

I was having the same thought.

And then I had to mute the TV because Giuliani makes me so angry.

As disturbed as I am by the rest of the speeches, Giuliani's is the only one that has genuinely enraged me thus far.

I'm about to switch from the US Open for Palin's speech, and then I'm switching straight to the Daily Show to combat the bad vibes.

Nice.

I could take to throwing Starburst at the TV. Once, in a fit of hatred, I stuck a marshmallow to a hated screenwriter's face (on the TV, I mean) during the Oscars. I can't say I recommend this. Marshmallow is harder to remove than you might think.

Yeah.

Did you hear Mitt Romney say "radical Islam is evil"? Freaked me out. Everoyne cheered. And I think they would have even if he hadn't said "radical"

That's why I only saw 5 minutes of it. Damn.

Oh, I think I saw you at Marrus' art booth at Dragon, but you were engaged in conversation. I hate I missed your panels, but the show was rough, and I was really really tired. I was so hoping to finally meet you since I've been reading you since 9/11.

It was a hard con for me too. I know how to do it now, I think, so next year!

My father in law grew up in Nazi Germany (he was 3 when Hitler came to power, and escaped from East Germany to West Germany as a teenager).

He's incredibly freaked out by the Republicans for the last 8 years or so. And he used to vote Republican for most of the time he's been an American citizen (he came here in 1957).

When he says something reminds him of the Nazis, my blood runs cold. He's said it to me of numerous behaviours the Republicans have been enacting. It's really really scary.

Doesn't sound high-strung to me. I believe that to some folks at the convention, we are the enemy.

(Scarier yet, before I can start watching it live, I have to watch an ad claiming that 8 out of 10 women have damaged hair!)

As I said in my post about the RNC... I don't understand how Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson can get away with appealing to that middle american homespun god damn pol-i-tician meme without someone reminding them that they're both rich white men who spent plenty of time in Washington (and hollywood) and are shilling for a man who came from an elite military well within the beltway family.

There's something creepy about watching someone who on a good day is worth half a billion pulling that shit and seeing the crowd go for it.

It doesn't sound high strung. I'm listening to my folks watch it, and their happy by all the hate.

I'm scared to keep living in this country, honestly.

With obviously less cred (our family came here long before the war), this is the reaction I keep having too.

It's like a friend of mine who is afraid of German Shepards. She wonders if experience is meaningless and time is just a big ball of stuff and if being Jewish just means being afraid of that sort of dog no matter what.

I was raised to watch all of both conventions. When they started broadcasting less of them on network, my mother called to make sure I had cable, so I could watch it all. She calls me sometimes, and she doesn't just sound angry anymore, but scared.

Oh and I've known I was the enemy since Dan Quayle.

I'm a woman. Queer. Non-Christian. Definitely part of the cultural elite. I loved Murphy Brown. And I've had an abortion.

Yeah.

Thing is... he's not Jewish. They have documents back to the 17th century (not forged) that prove the Aryaness of my husband's genetic line.

It's fun! We all take great pride in the fact that my marriage to [livejournal.com profile] midnightstation is a great big FUCK YOU to Hitler and his eugenics program. I mean, what's a nice Aryan boy like him doing married to a Black-Irish-Native American-Jew anyway?! (Ans: Diversifying the gene pool kthnx!)

It creeps me out because my FIL is very... even. He is not given to hyperbole in the slightest. He sees things quite clearly and calmly, and is a very mellow man, who usually can argue why something isn't as bad as one might think. So, when he says something is Nazi like? My ears prick up. Cause he would never ever say it lightly. :(

I normally like to watch at least part, so I know exactly just what was said, but I have been absolutely unable to have it on this week - I keep getting weirded out in a way not typical for me.

reading transcripts is becoming hard enough, but I cannot stomach the blatant lies and sheer hatred so many speakers espouse.

For what it's worth, I'm Jewish. Anti-Semitism scares me a lot, and I'm kind of twitchy about Christianity. However, I don't have a problem with German Shepherds.

I found that I could tone down my fear of anti-semitism by outsourcing it. I don't have to be hypervigilant because there are plenty of other people keeping track. They'll tell me if things start to go bad.

Some of it was so stupid, Guiliani was a relief.

I'm avoiding it for just that reason, but I know precisely what you mean. The only thing that's keeping me from being totally freaked is that the mainstream press has picked up many of Palin's various scandals, and I'm betting (or at least hoping) that this will utterly sink McCain to the point that I won't be sitting there on election night worrying that that pair of deeply scary people might actually end up running the nation I live in.

I can't begin to imagine what it's like to be Muslim and living here now. The hardcore Republicans don't like people like either of us, but they also have a specific enemy group that they've decided is evil with the big E, and that's really scary stuff.

I took comfort this morning when NPR said fewer Americans have been calling themselves Republicans of late. Sadly, that also means those folks who do call themselves Republican are more militantly Republican than ever. FOX news scares me too.
