coat

Just got the measurements on the coat (the one I am most worried about? the shoulders? 16.5 - 16.75 they said. The shoulders on my coat that fits me perfectly? 14.5 - 14.75. Two inches is not terrible, ne?). I _think_ it's doable and will give me enough extra fabric off the bottom to make the proper belt for it.

ETA: trying to arrange time to try on coat now.

ETA2: Crappy weapons policy at Gallifrey One, so I can't bring the Webley resin model. Tell me that this is not a good excuse to build a hand in a jar. Because that's a stupid, stupid project, right?

It's hard to say about the 2". You look like you have a fairly narrow frame, so 2" might be a bit more noticeable. Is there any way you can try on any coat with similar shoulder measurements to see the fit? From my days fitting menswear and suits, I recall that we always fit shoulders first because everything else can be altered/taken in/let out, but shoulders are pretty much stuck that way.

Yeah. Turns out the coat is in the city (this is an Ebay drama) so I'm working it out with the guy now. I really, really, have my fingers crossed on this, because it's this or wait until someone makes a decent copy of the coat that is not the China Dragon one which is WRONG WRONG WRONG, because any of the military surplus coats are just going to be too big on me (although that gave me another idea, which is pretend I'm working in costuming for a play, and call a bunch of high school military academies to find out if they have greatcoats in their uniforms (a lot do) and then get one close to my size that way).

Good idea with the military academies! It's amazing how often people are happy to accommodate you if they know/think it's for theatre. I have accounts at several wholesalers in town I shouldn't because I've called searching for a particular costume piece or prop. Very useful around Halloween for personal purposes.

Totally stupid.
You should totally do it.

What's really sick is that I want to do it because:

- it can double as a purse at the con if I do it right.

- man, I would laugh my ass off to have that living on my desk.

ROFL. Totally.

What's the point of working at home if you can't hoot like a loon sometime.

Purse?
I love you.

I cannot believe these words are about to (figuratively) exit my mouth, but: shoulder pads?

I support your hand-in-a-jar project.

Check your local Halloween store for rubber hands. Or wait until just after Halloween when they go on sale if you have time. Heck, I think I've seen motorized battery hands at the Spirit store; one of those in a jar should be easy. Not sure how to make it act as a purse, but hand in jar!

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The jar has about an inch of thick black casing on it -- I can put a second compartment in there for money/keys.

[identity profile] feyandstrange.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, perfect! I was thinking about using the inside of the rubber hand, but that's annoying and tricky if it's a motorized hand. I was picturing a Mason jar, but of course it would need something else to it.

Hand in a jar!! :D

Do it! Especially if you can make it move.

The only problem I can think of for making a hand-in-a-jar is getting the fish tank bubbler to run off batteries.
