i feel really dumb here... but... why is this so painful, besides the ridiculous MLK analogy? where is the misogyny and racism? and where is the fetishization? It looks... really earnest? Can straight people love slash without it being fetishization? I'm not even a straight person! But I'm kinda clueless on the politics here.

Feel free to not explain if you don't want, but I thought I'd ask.

"Campaign for equal representation of queer people in canon" is fine. Saying that you're doing that - and that queer people should support you - when you actually mean "but just my cute white boy pairing"? Not so fine.

For the misogyny and racism, check out the actual forums, which are full of references to the canon pairing as "SU(ck)" and posts that begin with "I'm a feminist, but..." and go on to explain how Uhura is clearly an arrogant, nagging, shrewish, oversexed bitch.
