You know what to do. :)

(Also, why do I share? John C Wright is a SF/F pro, and considering most of the consumers of SF/F I know are LGBTQ or allies, I thought you might want to know whose books not to buy).

Yeah, you can shut down the comments, but we can still tell the world you're a bigot who can't construct an argument. One advocates for not paying for you work, the other advocates for not reading it at all.

Thanks for playing. Also, I heard scads of people emailed Tor.

inspiration...

I really ought to thank this asshat as he's inspired me to write a post about philosophy, something that I haven't felt inclined to do in ages. The problem with his argument is a basic one, he is starting off with a bad premises. He argues essentially: how can these networks be so inconsistent with their morality? The problem is that he is assuming that his morality is the correct, one, right, true way which is a bogus premises to start from. The uptight, upright Xtian moral majority isn't even as old as Aristotle's ethics, never minding that it's a mish-mash of several local faiths and been updated and rewritten as it suits its believers over the couple of millenia.

Anyway, so yeahn inspiration. ;) swanky and probably not his intention.

I love the way he can't resist telling us that he has a doctorate. It's like the jerk who the airline puts next to you on a cross-continental flight, who still believes at age thirty-something that you'll be impressed when he tells you his SAT scores.

I wish his degree weren't in law. It's the sort of thing that makes the rest of us look bad. I don't mind about lawyer jokes, but this is you! Off my side now! territory.

I might be completely wrong, but it might be a doctor of jurisprudence, which is just a law degree. No dissertation.

So now I remember where I had heard of this guy before, which gives me a dilemma.

I was given the first two of one of his trilogies. I could not get through the first one---I never could even get into it, it just did not click with me, which, fine, not every book is for everyone. A friend of mine, more obstinate then myself, could get through the first one and started reading the second one, but he kept having to stop every ten pages to rant (and from his rants, I learned the books were akin to Atlas Shrugged Lite In Space), and finally he also gave up.

Up until this FAIL I was planning to donate them to the local public library, but now I cannot: That might lead to someone borrowing them, and I will not be a party to that. I cannot destroy books in any kind of conscience. So there's a dilemma. What to do?

When I realized what an incredibly horrible person Patricia Kenneally Morrison was, I agonized over what to do with my Keltiad books. I finally threw them away. It hurt my soul, but I honestly couldn't risk anyone checking them out of the library and not realizing that she's a racist maniac who supports genocide.

I have a similar feeling about a Nic Kellman novel that I ended up with because a screenwriter friend (who'd been offered a job adapting it) asked me to read it to help her judge whether she was just overreacting to its horribleness. It sits still, malingering, on my shelf.

i know, book burning sounds automatically bad, but make something productive out of it, like s'mores. then you can say, "i have turned this evil into delicious sugary goodness." no one is harmed by the awfulness and you've brought tasty treats into the world. as long as you're not taking away anyone else's right to read his work if they so choose (symbolically or otherwise) you might as well reduce, reuse, and recycle.

I hereby use my MLIS degree to grant you absolution.

We throw away words all the time. You are not attempting to prevent the sale, purchase, or borrowing of his books between consenting individuals. You are not trying to buy or borrow all the copies to destroy them. You are simply not consenting to participate in the exchange, and there are many many more copies where yours came from.

Reduce, repent, recycle. Go in peace, my child.

Donate them to the local public library, but first put a big sticker inside each warning that he's a homophobic bigot and people might wish to keep his background in mind when reading his words?

That way you're not destroying the book, you're preserving the library from potentially spending money on his works, you're allowing his words to remain a part of the public record accessible to those who wish to read them, and you're actually increasing awareness of his hatred.

I found that link via the bipolypagangeek community. I was horrified and sick to my stomach reading it. I couldn't read all the comments...I really *would* have lost my breakfast had I done that.

I also reposted the link in my journal. I'm sure there are friends of mine that will appreciate knowing whose books to not buy.

The extra topping on this failcake for me is that his "Orphans of Chaos" book evidently has more than one scene of the (percived and self-identifys as) 14 yr old girl getting tied up/spanked/made to wear skimpy maid uniforms and other domestic kink scenarios, by her much older schoolmaster. Yet, he equates BDSM as an intirnsically disordered mentality.

I'm all for a little domestic discipline where I can find it but I can't quite twist my mind around to the view that somehow having your protagonist dress up in a maid uniform is good clean fun but ... uh, all the other stuff is bad?

I love how he decides how all the dissenting and genuinely disappointed Christian respondents are part of the astroturf/troll brigade. That's why it's not worth responding to someone like that on their own territory. They'll erase you and call themselves martyred. That's what they do in real life, when they work themselves up to it, too.

Um. Homosex will ruin your life?
I need to go back and reread this tonight because my brain just stopped there.

However, his 'generic responses' to readers after he closed down comments where he talks about the 'one or two' people who will boycott his books? Man, that just reeks of fear. Rather than showing a bit of grace about it, it reads like he's saying, "Well, you should still buy my books because most of what's out there was written before I became a dick."

What? What? WHAT?
