Yes, but posting a "point and mock" link on my LJ is crossing a personal line. If he attacked me personally, I would go there. Until then, his writing is off limits for me.
On another note, some of my favorite (ww?) books are grotesqueries of Fail, e.g. Bio of a Space Tyrant by Piers Anthony. The series is spectacularly dreadful, in every possible way, but the series was one of my first exposures to sexuality in SF, and it blew my wee little 13 year old mind. I reread them occasionally (recently, even) just to touch base with that poor, naive child.
Mention Bio of a Space Tyrant and I'm suddenly 14 years old again, sneaking these books into the house and dreaming of the day when I, too, will take over the known world. And rereading the 'dirty' parts a lot.
Damn, I can't believe I forgot these books when I was trying to compile my list of Hispanics in SciFi.
Welllllll... he's definitely *trying* to write Hispanic characters, and for books written in the early to mid-80s, they're a noble effort, but there definitely issues. Every time I reread, there are parts where I just have to stop and shake my head, muttering, "oh dear, oh dear, oh deeeeear." On the other hand, PA does deal with issues of race, class, and poverty that are still (unfortunately) very topical.
Diane Duane's "Young Wizards" books, written for YA and worth reading at any age, have a Hispanic main character, Kit. And his sister kicks ass too, eventually.
My list of SF Novels with Hispanic Characters contains three novels/series.
Do you have Tobias Buckell's trilogy and Kage Baker's Children of the Company series on your list? (The latter has both Hispanic humans and Hispanic immortal cyborgs.)
Reading some of his linked fiction tempted me to put my own eyes out with my knitting needles - but then the lovely lace scarf that I am knitting in blues for mum's birthday would have gained red splotches and so I restrained myself…
