Why is [livejournal.com profile] ogi_ogas the maintainer of something that purports to be an SFF critique group?

Because he evidently also writes sci-fi and wow is it horrible. Lots of guns shoved into belts and very subject verb noun constructions. And very sterotypical traditional male style military sci-fi.

I'd swear he's a troll but evidently the book deal and the agent and the graduating from BU are all real. And if his sci-fi is any inidcation (and I read about two paragraphs before I got sick of it), he's got a very regressive idea of how people work.

He's an aspiring SF writer; a member of his critique group mentioned this approvingly somewhere, I think in one of the shaggirl threads.

All this makes me feel very glad I'm about to go down to D*C and do a bunch of programming on stuff that doesn't even exist in his world view.

I find this post interesting - not so much for the rather immature concepts on writing but the emphasis on rules. Very oriented to (inflexible, imo) structure, that one.

This comment on [livejournal.com profile] mecurtin's journal seems to suggest that Ogi also writes SFF.

Get the feeling Ogi counts himself as a 'real' writer, unlike those that write fan fiction? (Which is not so much directly related to the comment I've linked, but a general impression after a few days of this.)

Yes, unsurprising. Because things men do are real, and the things the rest of us do.... yeah. Fuck him.

What, this person - who has displayed awesome levels of stupidity - is supposedly a part of the SF community?

Jesus. Not in my book, he ain't...

I mean, wow. Things were bad enough, but if ogi writes SF and participates in the community he really should know better - even more so that previously. And thus teh stoopid is even MORE mind-boggling.

That's it. I'm calling and end to the day and mixing martinis...

racefail meets surveyfail

I suspect he's something to do with this (http://sff.onlinewritingworkshop.com/halloffame.shtml).

And since I'm zipping through my FL, don't know if you saw this (http://deadlychameleon.livejournal.com/230809.html).

Well, much as we all might like differently, SFF is not more a cohesive, politically homogenous group than any other. His style of sci-fi, if his exerpts are any indication, is the sterotypical rather simplisitc military sci-fi of the blow thigns up and shoot the bad guys type.

The group writes and critiques each other's work. His SF story is really quite dreadful, but I didn't think it appropriate to out him. Mocking him for the survey is one thing; for his writing, that's another. He'd have to cross several more lines before I'd unpack his adjectives.

However, the writing fiction part of his life contributes to my feeling that he's using his "survey" to deal with issues around writing and publication, in a very hostile/passive-aggressive way, i.e. he can't deal with the fact that his fiction suxxors and he's not going to get published by anything better than a vanity press, so he's sublimating by attempting to pin slash fanficcers to his corkboard. His focus on porn, slash, and straight, cis, female writers thereof is creepy.

Too. Much. Agenda.

I decided to go for it, not on the grounds of his adjectives, but on the grounds of the truly horrific racism, religious prejudice, and all-around stereotyping.

"Lagos dey peppershit of Africa. I think worst city in all world.” Wheel’s young black chauffeur Badu navigated the Pathfinder 4x4 through the squelching wetlands around Lake Chad, head joggling to some kind of draggy triphop with pidgin english lyrics, several songs seemed to concern angels and devils."
"“Don’t you have to pray to Mecca?”

“Sake of what?”

“Aren’t you Moslem?”

“You go to the church?”

“Nope.”

“You dey Jew?”

“Nope.”

“Ah-ah you no dey Christian, no dey Jew. No religion nohow.”

“That’s right.”

“So then why you asking me.”

Wheel shrugged. “Mahamat is Moslem.”

“Big man head no correct. Him no dey Moslem, him into nothing but big trouble, like you.”
"

Yes, all of this. My problem isn't that the writing is of the "Oh, John Ringo, NO!" school, but rather that it's obviously part of his agenda in how he's interacting with fandom and also has the potential to be all about the same misogyny and really ugly behavior we've seen in SurveyFail.

Writing is a craft with rules that can be learned. Otherwise, how would anyone get better?

Quite a few people don't. Kof.

okay, fair point. I'm still simmering with contempt and vexation about the chap, in general - so I could have been a wee bit more thoughtful before posting, yes.
