Tonight, Patty and I are going to see Coco Before Chanel at the SAG/WGA screening.
I am trying to be super productive today, not just because of that, but because a story that has been fighting me decided to work last night, right at bed time, and I'd like to just finish it at lunch. Because Torchwood fandom needs a post-CoE kinky romance between Jack and a Jewish brothel owner on a self-sustaining Mars resort colony, right? This story is so much less tawdry (porny, yes; tawdry, no) than I'm making it sound it's not even funny. NO, I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I'M WRITING THIS.
Remember ages ago I linked you all to a survey about subway and street harassment dimethirwen was doing? Results!
- Oo, just from the looks of the trailer it seemed to be an interesting film.
- Sounds like the best sort of post-COE fic. Particularly in the Rosh Hashanah-Yom Kippur season.
- Thanks! Very interesting info indeed. (Particularly to see that I'm not the only one who might experience a moment's harassment and simply gloss over it.)
It's sorta random. I don't know why the guy is Jewish, he just is, and then it sort of amused me because no one does that in fandom. Also fic summary at this point is: "Jack decides to have a rebound relationship; because he's a fuck-up, it lasts for 40 years." Ianto is a major plot point and the Doctor even shows up.
If I'm going to be gratuitous the reason he's Jewish is so that he can be circumcised. Is that in bad taste?
Huh. I actually sorta need to thank you for mentioning this, because it's not something I think about that much since most men in the age range I've interacted with naked have been circumcised -- the States, you know -- and it's not a level of detail I get into in most fics (even though I tend to assume uncircumcised when writing Jack and stuff outside the States in general). Jack's point of reference, especially at the dawn of the first Earth Empire, is going to be different. Realism comes from funny little details. Thank you -- this never would have occurred to me (despite, clearly, how much thought I apparently have about it).
Glad to have been of help! It's the time of year in which I really think about being Jewish rather than an Apathetic Agnostic/Aggressive Atheist.
If I think of Jack in that kind of detail I'm also in the mind that Jack (and most of the future, eventually) are going to be uncut. The States seem odd to me in that manner, I mean, In Israel and the rest of the Middle East and Muslim nations in general, men are going to be circumcised... but why do so in the States for aesthetic reasons(?)
It's starting to change in the US, but in the 1950s it was a "health and hygiene" thing and then it just continued. There's really only begun to be mainstream backlash about it in the last 10 or so years. Most of the women I know, especially the ones my age, if they've only have sex with Americans have never interacted with an uncut cock. Certainly, if I said I've seen about 100 men naked between sex work and my personal history, I can only think of one off-hand who was uncut.
Women younger than me, or less involved with older men have different mileage on this, but it was the dominant practice here for so so so long.
Someone who is an activist on this subject (and there surely is someone on my friendslist who is), can probably give you better numbers/history, but there you go.

I think that other than than ETGB, this is the story I most want to read by you at the mo'. Rebound Jack is desperately needed in fandom.
Enjoy Coco, it's supposed to be great and Audrey Tautou is quite often amazing in anything she appears.
