"I" in academic and scholarly writing

This is not a search for advice. This is a point of curiosity to me, because my education was sort of extreme and obsessive on this point, and it occurs to me that perhaps other fifth-graders were not scarred for life by writing papers that said things like "this author feels that Disney World would be an idea summer vacation destination for her family."

So, inquiring minds and all that....

This comment has led to the issue of passive voice being considered in an entirely new light by this author. It is possible that the original comment replied to with this comment was made by someone who was a major goody-goody in high school. :)

Sometimes, when a major goody-goody befriends a case of uncontrolled ADHD, the major goody-goody has to re-evaluate positions on many values that had previously been held dear, and to reconcile those with the reality of witnessing mud being thrown, marshmallows being accidentally slung into flame sculptures and the subsequent appearance of flame where no flame was meant to be, cans of beans exploding, cold feet being warmed in leftover pans of refried beans, windows being broken, glovebox compartment lights being shot out with BB guns, the SuperSoaking of the end-of-school teachers' meeting...
