Since there's been a recent influx, here's the "ask random questions" post. If you've got a question for me (whether you're new here or not), feel free. No topic is off-topic.

Meanwhile, for the people involved in the hyphenated-American conversation (or the Florida doctor experimenting on pregnant women to prevent "gender inappropriate" behavior in girls) -- LJ isn't emailing me my comments today. I'm sort of trying to keep up, but am actually pretty lost. I hope you all are getting comments though or having fun amongst yourselves or something. I'll catch up soon.

Finally, for those who aren't here for the ranting and the politics but for the porn: I've figured out the Jack/Ianto long BDSM fic I"ve threatened to write. So yeah. Probably won't touch it until after Bristol. But writing it, yes.

Now, dinner time, and Patty and I have some Buffy to watch.

Has your acting career faded, been replaced, or is it just not film-centric? IMDB shows a dearth of parts for the last few years.

Is Torchwood the same as the more recent Dr. Who series? If not, what's the difference? I mean, I suppose I could Just Fucking Google It, but I haven't yet and here you are asking to be asked questions, so here I am stretching for questions to ask.

Why are you watching Buffy and Angel so long after they've gone off the air?

What's next?

Date: 2010-07-01 01:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
I sort of took a year off from acting when I wrote and promoted the HP book and then that sort of became two years when I started doing a lot of acafen stuff and I've just sort of become really busy with the sort of weird Z-list personality thing I have going on. Living in New York there is less film work here, and actually the last really cool thing I did was the voices of Desire and Delirium in "The Sandman" in a fundraiser for the CBLDF last year. I have started auditioning again though.

Torchwood is a spinoff series from Doctor Who, much like the Sarah Jane Adventures except for grownups, so lots of sex and death.

Amazingly, I never saw Buffy and Angel when they aired, but my partner is really into them, so we've been watching. Part of this is because she has to put up with so much chatter about my fandoms, part of this is because I needed to see them for the Bristol paper.

And that's what's next. I leave for the UK in a week to present this thing on fan reactions to character deaths at an academic conference. Which is pretty rad considering my academic credentials are a 15+-year-old BA in Journalism and my own, "kids, let put on a show" attitude.

Is it pronounced RachelYNE or RachelEEN?

Neither!

It's Ra-shell-lean. Despite what it looks like, there's no Rachel in sight.

Oh! Oh! I have questions!

1. TEA. We should drink it soon. Ok, that was more of a comment. (Possibly post Bristol?)

2. Do you know Girlyman? (The band, not "do you know girlymen".) I have a reason for asking.

Date: 2010-07-01 02:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
1. Yes! After Bristol I will be much saner -- at least for a month!

2. I know of them because [livejournal.com profile] redstapler is a big fan, but that is all I know.

Oh! I have a third question too!

Are you SAG/Aftra? I assume the answer is yes:(

Date: 2010-07-01 02:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
I am SAG, I am not AFTRA (I'm a must-join) because I keep waiting for them to merge. That said if certain things on the horizon wind up being under AFTRA contract, I will drop that $$ in a second because even background work on those certain things would rock my world.

Ok, since you're asking to be asked questions, here goes:

I hope this doesn't sound offensive, but is there a reason you write slash and not femmeslash? I'm asking because I'm a big fan of your stories, but I don't think I've ever seen you slash females. Maybe I've missed it, or maybe there's a reason?

Also, my friend was asking me why I read slash when I am not attracted to men. Is it reasonable to say I find something erotic, but I myself would not like to partake in the activities I'm reading about?

Also, finally, can I friend you?

P.S. I am recently out of the closet as well as recently into fandom, so I apologize in advance if any of this is offensive. I don't have a very good internet voice, so things don't always come out like I mean them too :)

re: femmeslash -- no particular reason. It's not a policy thing with me and it's not something I'm entirely comfortable with since you know, female-ish person involved with a chick. I know some gay women don't write it because it feels too close to their own realities and stuff like that... but mostly I just don't. That said, I'm not a wide-ranging author in general. I get on a character or a situation in a world that I'm interested in and I just write that a lot. I do have a lesbian werewolf story in progress though.

And sure. What turns our crank on the page often doesn't in real life. It's true of all sorts of stuff like kinks and even narratives that in life would really not be our thing. I think various flesh configurations count too.

And sure. Friend away! I mostly only yell when people aren't trying.

I wanted to go to Dragon*Con and saw that you were going to be a guest and got really excited, but due to ridiculous drama by 40 year old men that's on par with that of 12 year olds, I can't go. I am sad face :(

I think the way any kid wants attention, yeah. Mostly I want to tell stories and be other people. Acting is just one part of that.

We met on [livejournal.com profile] _riverside a community for discussing [livejournal.com profile] ellen_kushner's Swordspoint and related books. Since she's an academic and I keep swords by the bed, it was a bit, excuse the pun, on point. Since we live in the same city, we met after flirting a lot (involving a very fucked up night in a bar with some dude who wanted to be our friend and kept telling us stories about the omlettes his ex-gf made him while wearing only a thong). Being chicks, we were circumspect for a while and then finally got together. Then, thanks to my ex-roommate moving to China and the horrors of NYC's real estate market, Patty moved in. Now it is yay.

First, I'm only familiar with new Who.

Second, I feel like I really have to defend this, because it's not about wanting to bang David Tennant (not that there's anything wrong with that). But Ten. I'm interested in his really shit relationship with his own power and respond pretty strongly to his fucked up relationship with Jack as awesome ex-boyfriend superheroes. I love the arc that puts Rose in the other universe (I don't necessarily love what they do with her after that) and LOVE "Waters of Mars."

All of this said, the episode that made me fall in love with the show is a Nine episode, "Dalek." I wish Eccleston were less the way he is about his time on the show.

Umm... do you mind if I friend you?

Also, to make this at least slightly interesting, what's the most unexpectedly cool or interesting place you've been? (Cool and interesting aren't meant to be synonymous there, so I'm afraid it's not the clearest question ever.)

All good. Welcome!

That's a hard question, as I get to go to a lot of cool places and am a big fan of serendipity so a lot of sort of odd, magical shit tends to happen to me. For a not too exotic place, I remain floored by how really emotionally affected I am by Chicago's Millennium Park for no particular reason.

Most of the places I've really loved I knew that would happen going into it. But I suppose St. Katharine's Dock market in London is quite a thing for me. Patty and I stumbled on it randomly right after we landed in London and I've actually arranged my schedule on my next trip to make sure I get there, forgoing something else of emotional and scholarly interest to me in order to make it happen. God, that's a weird answer.

I have this thing where people and how they function and interact with each other and particularly themselves (and the way people think!) facinates me -- often to the point of forgetting that I need to interact with those around me instead of just observing (the world is not my ant farm). That said, your writing has brought to the surface for me many things that were brewing but I couldn't solidify - that you for giving me more to ponder!

I have also just discovered that I may be in NYC for a weekend in August. With your crazy travel schedule, will you be there? If so, would you like to meet for a beverage?
