"The Day the Aliens Came" - The Mountain Goats (I'll email you) "As Cool As I Am" - Dar Williams "Tear Me Down" - Spoon, covering the song from Hedwig "On the Air" - Girlyman "Company of Fools" - Great Big Sea "The Wizard and I" - Wicked (hee) "Stronger" - Kanye West
Oh, oh "The Wizard and I" I actually sort of live in terror of that song... I love it, but so much of that narrative arc is about how the people we admire from afar disapoint up-close. For me, that song is always a cautionary tale.
And I'm going to be totally lame here and say Britney's "Stronger." I don't know; it's one of the few songs of hers that I feel like you can actually belt at the top of your lungs and I feel like it's one of her better songs from her pre-breakdown years.
Also "Killer Queen." I don't know why. But that should make up for the Britney lameness.
• Janelle Monae's "Many Moons" - as much because Monae is fucking awesome as because the song is, well, also fucking awesome.
• Pretty much anything by Alkaline Trio, but I fully accept that very few people over the age of 18 appear to share this feeling.
• Metric. Most Metric songs, but particularly "Black Sheep," from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack.
There are so so so many more but I'm not at home in front of the wall of CDs and thus nothing is coming to mind. I keep asking myself, What would I put on if I needed to feel like hot shit and was the furthest thing from it? And the answer is probably Monae, Metric, Superchunk, The Anniversary, Elastica... and The Thermals. Particularly "No Culture Icons."
"Freedom 90" by George Michael "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor "Let it Rock" by Kevin Rudolf "Allegretto" by Bond "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley and the Wailers
Go Places - The New Pornographers It Doesn't Always Have to be Beautiful - Slow Club I Guess We'll Forget the Sound, I Guess - Bodies of Water The World is Awaiting - Sunset Awake My Soul - Mumford & Sons Can't Go Back Now - The Weepies Riches and Wonders - The Mountain Goats Stars - Au Revoir Simone Crooked Legs - The Acorn
... and more, if you're still looking for recs. Phew, that was practically a whole playlist!
Many of my songs that underscore that mood are them because of the underlying music and not necessarily the lyrics. Springsteen's "Because the Night" and "American Land" come to mind, as well as almost anything fast-paced and Irish.
OK, having grown up with a mom who ADORES Streisand, so I know every note of every song she's ever done, my thought when I heard Lea Michele sing it was: "Honey, you got a fantastic set of pipes. And give you another 20 or 30 years and you can belt that like Streisand." :>
For sheer, ass-kicking goodness, it's hard to beat Battle Without Honor or Humanity. I also have a pretty big weakness for You Know My Name by Chris Cornell. Actually, a couple of the Bond themes are good for this kind of sentiment.
I know I have others, but I'm at work, so I can't really dig.
I am what I am - John Barrowman - actually that is more to remind me that I am awesome for actual kick: The Fix soundtrack - has the awesome line: Imagine Cain and Abel courting Lady Macbeth!

I could add more once I get home. I've got a whole playlist on my home computer but don't remember a lot of the songs, off the top of my head.

And not on topic, but you need to listen to the new "Origin: Orphans" album, especially the song "Underage". You will like it.
