  • Have heard more from Patty. She heads to the site tomorrow, so not sure what contact will be like. She does have a mobile there now. I just have to wait to call until she can get in touch to give me a sense of her schedule there (since archaeology can often involve working 6 days a week and getting up at 5am and going to bed at 7pm). There have been stories involving monkeys and motorcycles.

  • Question for fellow academics/acafen: does anyone have any suggestions for academic work that is any of the following? I need to do some background reading and I need to cite some stuff for a small section in a paper I'm working on. Thnx.
    - something that doesn't suck that looks asexuality in literature or media from a queer theory perspective
    - old/bad/offensive material that presents asexuality as the absence of orientation instead of an orientation in and of itself

  • D&J meeting last night. We've got a scene and another song. It's really good.

  • Did you all see Rachel Maddow last night? I thought she knocked it out of the park, particularly with her words about why we tell stories about heroes. So compelling; so interesting to me for totally tangental to the context reasons.

Also? As much as I'm all "I support gun rights" I was flabberghasted to learn some of the stats she cited.

And in the name of not saying shit in 140 characters or less, I also want to note that I really, really support gun control; in fact I want a bumper sticker: "I support gun rights _and_ gun control."

I think people should be able to have and get guns legally. I also have no problem with waiting periods and no problem with bans on certain types of guns and gun parts that don't have legitimate sport, self-defense, or hunting applications (and let me just pause to say there's responsible hunting, and then there's cruel, evil, wasteful hunting).

And the carry laws in Arizona? Really really bad.

  • Yes, I've heard about Luhrmann making noises about shooting Gatsby in 3D (How many people emailed or tweeted me about this yesterday? Go on, guess).

You guys all know I loathe 3D, because it tends to give me a headache, and because Patty can't see it. That said, more organic 3D that's about something other than shit blowing up? Interesting (like that 3D Carmen that's happening). And if you look at the visual depth in the collage-style design of a lot of the marketing stuff Luhrmann's movies, I think you can kinda see what he's thinking. I also think that the unreality I feel more accutely with 3D films than 2D films despite what 3D is supposed to do works for Luhrmann's heightened reality aesthetic which demands the audience recognize itself as audience and participate.

Do I think it'll work? Dunno. Do I want it? see: 3D and I don't get along. Do I think this is a film experiment that someone has to try? Yeah. Luhrmann makes more sense than most as the guy to do it. I mean, think about what would have happened if Moulin Rouge! had been in 3D... it almost makes sense.

  • LfT: I'm loving not being on LJ. To the extent that I sort of want to be here even less. I knew I felt like I was suffocating, but I didn't realize how much. But I'm also trying to control the random brain clutter factor over there and like the social and fandom platform LJ provides. Also? Having LfT actually does make it easier for me to be here despite everything I've just said.

  • Kali and I are about 100 pages into our novel. About 30 of those pages will probably get killed is my guess, because we could spend days happily writing our characters talking about the weather. But oh man, this thing is ROCKING.

  • Who wants to suggest markets for a non-comedic story that I'm convinced isn't SF/F and technically has no supernatural content, but is narrated by a dead iguana who has feelings about cellular decay? I don't know where it came from, but it did.

  • I have ordered more things from Trashy Diva. Specifically a dress I've had my eye on for years, that finally went on sale for a price I was willing to pay. I think there's a lot to be said about my sense of female gender presentation through the lens of gay male culture and the whole thing where the only dresses I wear are from TD. Ya know?

  • Shit ton of work today. If I'm good and finish and the snow does seem too scary, I can go to ECD tonight. Right now work awaits.

I just can't get into the 3D. Most of the time, it doesn't seem to add much value to the film, and often I find it gives me a headache.

I still sometimes wish I had gone into the Archaeology field.

Yay for D&J! Very exciting. ^_^

Also, I think if Luhrmann does go 3D, he'll do it the way I've always wanted to see a director do it, where it's not about stuff coming out at you, it's about how deep you can see into the world he creates. Visually, and I suppose metaphorically. I've been learning a lot about the tech behind this, and that would be a really fascinating choice for Gatsby. Of course, I'm risking a blackout or migraine everytime I see a 3D movie, but if it's worth it...

    Right, right this!

Tron's really been the first 3D thing I've seen where I've felt the use of 3D was narratively justified.

Which I still haven't managed to see yet, damn it. :/ But frankly, I'd be disappointed if a Tron movie was made in this day and age and it wasn't filmed in 3D.

It's pretty cool. The first time I saw it it gave me a headache, but the second time I managed to get the glasses positioned just right over my glasses and it was okay. It's totally something about my astigmatism and the double glasses that makes my head hurt.

Did you see the stop-motion film of Coraline? Aside from the occasional comin' at ya! moment they mostly used 3D to give the world of the Other Mother depth. I thought it cleverly underscored the notion that Coraline was being drawn in to a trap...

Likewise, Pixar's UP is largely set on a South American plateau or in the sky and contains amazing vistas that recede from the viewer -- at times I really felt like I was looking at a horizon-spanning panorama.

I do 3D either. It gives me a screaming headache. I'm nearsighted and have an astigmatism and have just given up going to see anything in 3D as it's just not worth it.

Hey - thank you for your views on gun rights and gun control. I've been searching for a way to say, "I support both rights and control for gun ownership" but couldn't find the precise wording.

I'm so moderate at this point that I tend to flail when discussing politics (really, the only issues I am truly fierce about are abortion/reproductive rights and QUILTBAG rights; there may be more but I'm sick and fibromyalgia-struck and can't remember).
You nailed it. Is it okay if I quote you?

I'm still betting (and sincerely hoping) that 3D is a fad that will soon fade away.

Also, a friend of mine who's a reporter posted about writing an article about LGBT people in fandom, that you might be interested in.

You may have seen this elsewhere, but I just heard about the GLBT History Museum that's going to be opening soon through my GLBT professional network list at work.

I think there's a lot to be said about my sense of female gender presentation through the lens of gay male culture and the whole thing where the only dresses I wear are from TD. Ya know?

I went looking for something to wear to a rehearsal dinner when a friend of mine got married several years ago and ended up with a slinky lavender dress which I felt, deep in my inner drag queen soul, needs a big rainbow feather boa. I still have not managed to acquire a feather boa.

My mother made me a pink scarf out of fun fur. Whenever I wore it to work, my boss would make a comment about my boa. I don't know if this was because he was looking through the lens of gay male culture or if my boss somehow knew I always wanted to be a chorus girl or what, but thinking of it as a boa was pretty much the only reason I wore it.

That's really interesting to me about Gatsby being filmed in 3D. I've always associated 3D with genres where there's a lot of action and things that can jump out of the screen at you, like action and horror. Part of the reason why I've never been able to see 3D becoming a standard is that it's so hard for me to see it being applied to other genres, like drama.

But it seems like technology has changed some, too. At least, I was really surprised when I finally got a chance to see a 3D television. Not impressed enough to get one, but it seemed to work for me and it looked more "normal" than I expected. The old type of 3D with the red/blue lenses doesn't work for me.
