I do not have animation receptor sites. But Patty made me watch some of Yami no Matsuei last night, to which my reactions are as follows:

- Is that a boy or a girl?
- One of the one's with glasses is totally cute
- CINNABON!
- I can hear the keyboards clicking! (obvious pairings are obvious)
- Hey, is that Lucius Malfoy?
- "The mouth is the source of all disaster!"

So the adventure shall continue.

Yami no Matsuei is probably the reason I started buying suits. I bought a suit to cosplay Tatsumi (brown suit and glasses) and discovered that I looked really good in suits and vests. So now I own more of them, though Tatsumi's is the only suit I own that was designed for a man.

Also, why do people think "women's three piece suit" means pants, jacket, skirt and not pants, jacket, vest? How is it three pieces if I can only wear two of them at a time?

As an animator myself, I'm curious about why you say you have no animation receptor sites. Is it just not an artform that you get or appreciate?

I can think the art is really beautiful, especially in terms of still frames, but it almost never moves me emotionally. I never can just accept the characters as they are in animated form -- to me they are always representations of live action, and so animation feels... diluted to me, I guess is the right word. I don't get how to engage with it, without extrapolating it out to a more physical world. And, to sort of reference some of the scholarship I do -- I feel like with live-action fiction or books, it's easy to emotionally pull characters into our real world; whereas with animation I'm more obligated to step into that world, which is something I don't know how to do.

Hmmm, interesting. Sorry if I came of as accusing in my original comment. I'm sort of biased when it comes to animation!

In regards to emotion, have you ever seen the movie "Grave of the Fireflies"? It's a very powerful film that I've only managed to watch once and I don't know if it's something I can bring myself to watch again. Not that it's bad, quite the opposite! I just remember having an extreme reaction to it.

As an experiment, you might want to try "Haibane Renmei." It's a very short little series which seduces you into the world. Also, quite unexpectedly emotionally intense.

There are no explosions or Kaori Yuri-type antics and yet it's one of the most emotionally intense anime series I have ever watched (the other is Shoujo Kakumei Utena/Revolutionary Girl Utena, but it's much longer).

Ohhh, Yami no Matsuei. CLASSIC. :D Seriously, it was one of my first "big" fandoms, and I still hold I special place in my heart for it, despite the wackiness. ;P

Also, our hostess is not the first to notice the Malfoy resemblance. I still treasure the strangefandom assessment of the series, based on viewing two AMVs with no previous knowledge of the source at all, that read, "Okay so remember the internet from, oh, about 1999 - 2006? And how it was nothing but fangirls who were convinced that Draco Malfoy was really awesome and misunderstood and abused and just really really really needed a ride on Harry Potter's cock in order to turn it all around? Well apparently they've been busy, because they went and made a whole anime about him. OH COME ON, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S GOING ON HERE. We have some gaunt dude with messy dark hair [coughHarrycough] who runs around in a trench coat after a tall, pale dude with white hair and an earring. Oh, god, Yami no Matsuei! It is so full of wonderful and fucked-up (often both the same). I'll never forget watching fansubs of it with my anime-savvy friend, who explained it all. To the extent that it can be explained.

Have you seen the story of how Hisoka died yet?

The cute one with glasses that I like best is Watari. He's the scientist with a giant bow in his hair who's always looking for a sex change potion, just out of curiosity.

Very little blogging, lots of wearing costumes Andrea made me, contributing dialogue to her fanfiction (mostly Star Trek or Ace Attorney), making heaps of jewelry, and also, buying a house. Also still being bad at correspondence, but that's not new. ;)

Patty is responsible for some of my very favorite fanfiction about YnM, so yes, do watch. :)

The manga is better; I really appreciate the attention that the anime calls to Hisoka's character development, since he's my favorite character, but it skips and simplifies a lot. Also, Patty probably already knows this, but even if you don't normally do subtitles well, DON'T watch the very end dubbed. (It's not a very good dub to begin with, but somebody took some "creative" liberties with dialogue in the last episode.)

Aren't we all? Seriously, I think I probably became an anime fan almost entirely on the strength of the remarkable quality of Japanese voice acting.

I have consistently been impressed by the quality of Japanese voice acting, which they seem to take seriously as actual acting, as opposed to the "we're one short on the cast, let's haul in some random person from the street, they'll do!" philosophy of American voice acting -- painfully bad.

Not to mention the "Let us declaim, rather than act!" school of American voice acting, which seems to contemplate that there is no possibility at all that the actors' lines could or should be rendered as natural dialogue. I have no idea why that set of conventions for American voice acting arose or became so universal, or why anyone ever tolerated it. It taints everything it touches, it's actively painful to listen to, and yet there must be some reason it became a standard. I'd love to know how and why that happened, out of sheer bloody-minded curiosity.

But not as much as I'd love for it to just go away, and be consigned to the dustbin of history.

I sometimes refer to this as "Saturday Morning" voice acting, in which the actors think that because it's animated they have to use funny voices. Um, did you not notice the bit where people were getting murdered? On screen?

I would rather go to the dentist than watch anything dubbed with American voice actors. And I'm not exaggerating.

We have a kinda-sorta-step-godchild who is a huge fan of Bleach, but who has never seen Yami no Matsuei. We would like to remedy this over the summer, while she's up attending the BU summer program. Because, of course, we adore YnM.
