I do not have animation receptor sites. But Patty made me watch some of Yami no Matsuei last night, to which my reactions are as follows:

- Is that a boy or a girl?
- One of the one's with glasses is totally cute
- CINNABON!
- I can hear the keyboards clicking! (obvious pairings are obvious)
- Hey, is that Lucius Malfoy?
- "The mouth is the source of all disaster!"

So the adventure shall continue.

Btw, please tell me you're watching the Japanese dub and not the English Dub? Because... no. Just Nooo. Muraki's voice makes me cry tears of intense sadness.

I hope not, anyway, because way to wreck the entire experience. I still wonder, in occasional idle moments, what the hell whoever did that voice casting could have been thinking.

My friend had me watch episode 7, the one when they're on the ship in English and I can't even- Their voices are just so off for the character and seriously, Muraki, Why!?

I had to put a stop to that before it ruined one of my favorite episode~

I mean, of course, the American dub version, in case that wasn't clear. I am a fan of subtitles all the way.

Aren't we all? Seriously, I think I probably became an anime fan almost entirely on the strength of the remarkable quality of Japanese voice acting.

I have consistently been impressed by the quality of Japanese voice acting, which they seem to take seriously as actual acting, as opposed to the "we're one short on the cast, let's haul in some random person from the street, they'll do!" philosophy of American voice acting -- painfully bad.

Not to mention the "Let us declaim, rather than act!" school of American voice acting, which seems to contemplate that there is no possibility at all that the actors' lines could or should be rendered as natural dialogue. I have no idea why that set of conventions for American voice acting arose or became so universal, or why anyone ever tolerated it. It taints everything it touches, it's actively painful to listen to, and yet there must be some reason it became a standard. I'd love to know how and why that happened, out of sheer bloody-minded curiosity.

But not as much as I'd love for it to just go away, and be consigned to the dustbin of history.

I sometimes refer to this as "Saturday Morning" voice acting, in which the actors think that because it's animated they have to use funny voices. Um, did you not notice the bit where people were getting murdered? On screen?

I would rather go to the dentist than watch anything dubbed with American voice actors. And I'm not exaggerating.
