Dec. 5th, 2004 01:27 amSnazzy luggage (something that was absurdly important to me -- I've spent a huge amount of my past airport time looking half dead and completely disorganized, but that was some other life that I don't really approve of anymore), earplanes and pressure socks are now winging their way to me. I have about a billion more things that must get done before this trip (a haircut, reading materials, snacks, a CD wallet, heels on my shoes, etc.), but slowly and surely this is all getting done.
I remain completly weirded out by it all, but yay Ebags sale. The luggage is plum-colored -- a 29" suiter roller thingy, and a matching carry-on bag. And yes, I am preoccupied about what to wear on the plane, but not because of my insane vanity but because it will be like 30 degrees here and over 100 degrees there, and I'll be on a plane for just _ages_ and it's always cold on planes, and that's all hard to plan around and yes, I want to look all cute when I land, because really, this is me merely justifying my insane vanity.

Date: 2004-12-05 03:42 am (UTC)Wear something comfortable and that won't wrinkle on the plane. Stretch knits were always y airplane friends. Stuff makeup, moisturizer, antipersperant, and a spare shirt (or whole outfit) in your carry-on, and sneak off to the bathroom for touch-ups shortly before they lock you down for landing. Nobody looks good after a long flight. I used to slather my face and hands with moisturizer (plane air is dry) pretty regularly during the flight, then clean up a bit with a wet-nap or a hot washcloth if I could get one, and reapply moisturizer, then makeup, take my hair down, all that; reapply deodorant, and swap to a less sweaty-stale bra and top. Brush hair and/or apply cute hat to cover for bad hair.
It may be 100 degrees outside in AUS, but the airport will be air-conditioned. Something like pants, tank top and cardigan or less dorky equivalent is what I'd go with. Layers, epspecially, since as you said planes are almost alays cold, except every once in a while when they're eighty damn degrees. And comfy shoes - your feet own't want to go back into them after that long a flight. (Do try to get up and stretch during the flight.)
If you're prone to ear difficulties, take an antihistamine like Sudafed before and during the flight (like, long enough before takeoff that it will be in effect, say an hour, ditto landing). And make sure to stay hydrated, since antihistamines will dehydrate you more - but they're an ear canal lifesaver. (An extra water bottle in the carryon is always good.) My boy was honestly afraid he'd never be able to fly again due to horrible ear pain that would last for days after a flight; he tried painkillers, all the various ear plugs, drinking himself comatose, you name it, nothing worked. But being on Sudafed during takeoff and landing - he's totally fine now, no pain and hardly even a pop.
If you get allergies, bring appropriate meds just in case you're allergic to something Aussie. It beats trying to sort out which foreign brand of drug you can take when your nose is dripping.
AUS occasionally tries to decontaminate international planes while you're still on them. If you're allergic to the scent of cleansers or asthmatic or anything, this can be a problem, so be aware of it.
And just in case even though I'm sure you know all this stuff, remember that bottles of shampoo and whatever will try to pop open from air pressure, so "burp" the bottles and/or put 'em in Ziplock bags. Clear Ziplock bags are your best packing friend anyway, because that way if HOmeland Security or customs goes through your bag, if all your bits and clothes are sealed in big individual ziplock bags, they don't usually open them, and your clothes stay clean and folded, and it's easy for them to repack the bag without making a horrid mess of your stuff. (Drug and bomb sniffy things can sniff through plastic, so that's okay.)

Date: 2004-12-05 09:04 am (UTC)so I guess I'm supporting your vanity and suggesting something like taking toner or witch hazel [I don't wear foundation or blush so can put stuff on my face pretty easily] to splash on your face/hairline/scalp along the way. now I might also take something like rosewater spray, that isn't overpowering but makes me feel a little more alert and together.
