I just realized you don't let people comment on your journal.

Anyway, before you return the R&J DVD, screw around with the extras -- there's a hysterical bit in there where Luhrmann explains the horror that was pitching the film to the studios, and it includes this mini test-film he did with DiCaprio that is... well, strangely compelling would be the best way to put it.

And yeah -- the trilogy business is about the style of film, not the precise plots really. Will not keep ranting as I've somewhere to be, but you have so hit on a pet subject.

Also, if you can find the New Yorker interview with Luhrmann (parts of it are floating around the web, but not all of it as far as I can tell), it's pretty fascinating.

And yeah, Leguizamo just rocks my world as Tybalt. Claire Danes _still_ annoys me though, although I get why it was fun to use her as a dress up doll.

I think if you push the up arrow on your DVD at the menu the gold heart will light up and if you then press play you'll go to the extras (it's different on different disks). The pitching Shakespeare thing is so funny it reduced me to tears the first time I saw it.

What you should try to find, if you're really into Red Curtain Cinema is the bonus disk that's in the RCT box set -- there's hours and hours and hours of Luhrmann ranting about it -- but it's basically about presenting heightened realities where you are moved _because_ you know how the story ends from the beginning and because you never forget it's a story. Cool shit.

And Strictly is about the sweetest movie ever made, and I tend to loathe romantic comedies.

The commercial release of R+J is also only one disk -- the extra disks are on Moulin Rouge (which is a two disk set, and btw, has some of the most cracked easter eggs ever on it, to the point that my roomie and I disolve into uncontrollable fits of laughter whenever we hear Your Song at the piano bar we go to), and in with the big RCT box set (which is Strictly, R + J, the two disk MR, and then an extra disk which has like 8 hours of stuff that ranges from intellectually cool to just flat out peculiar (including the video for the bollywood song that is used in MR).
