Dear LJ

Dear LJ,

I like you and all. I pay for an account have have been here a really long time. I was even an early adopter at one point on a different acount.

This business is a really uncool idea though. Poking at someone is quasi-legitimate, but wow, do I not want LJ in the business of telling people how to be "friends" -- and we all know how much LJ users have ever liked that particular terminology assumption for those they choose to converse with online. In case you missed it -- not at all.

You need to change this one. Let people write their own messages. Make the default message less inane. You certainly don't need to be finding yet another way to trivialize the word friend, and the "be a friend, use our service" message is particularly crass.

Oh my. Using that button on me is most likely to earn a fast boot off my flist.

If you're worried about me, send me an email or post a gentle query. I'm nobody's freakin' performing monkey.

Oh gimme a freakin' break! If my flist is worried about me, my email address is right there. They can take the time to drop a note.

How rude. I don't like the button at all. Like the others have commented - if you're worried about me, e-mail me or make a post in my journal.

I like your icon,
Susan

What an impressively noxious new "service".

I am sure that a lot of people would feel flattered by it, actually. The majority of LJ users are below 18, last I heard, and this is right up their alley.

Regarding the "be a friend" phrase, keep in mind that LJ's messages have traditionally been sarcastic. This seems to be in the same vein.

Me!

I would feel flattered. I haven't been so happy lately and haven't wanted to post.
While I think we should write whatever message it pleases us to write, it would be nice to know that people look for my posts.

Just make sure you don't use it anonymously:

Ironically, I didn't even realize I wasn't logged in when posting that; hope you weren't "annoyed".

I'm in the "use it, and get a fast boot off my friends list" category. If you don't know me well enough to send email, or call, or write, you should not be expecting me to dance for your amusement here.
