Dear LJ,

I like you and all. I pay for an account have have been here a really long time. I was even an early adopter at one point on a different acount.

This business is a really uncool idea though. Poking at someone is quasi-legitimate, but wow, do I not want LJ in the business of telling people how to be "friends" -- and we all know how much LJ users have ever liked that particular terminology assumption for those they choose to converse with online. In case you missed it -- not at all.

You need to change this one. Let people write their own messages. Make the default message less inane. You certainly don't need to be finding yet another way to trivialize the word friend, and the "be a friend, use our service" message is particularly crass.

I am sure that a lot of people would feel flattered by it, actually. The majority of LJ users are below 18, last I heard, and this is right up their alley.

Regarding the "be a friend" phrase, keep in mind that LJ's messages have traditionally been sarcastic. This seems to be in the same vein.
