I barely even remember who Kingsley Shacklebolt is in the books ( I suppose I could go look it up in the lexicon), but could someone, ANYONE, tell me why apparently all of fannon has decided he's the sexiest thing to ever walk to the earth? Does that come from anywhere or are people just bored again?

Is he the bald guy?

I think it's supposed to be implied in the way female witches react to him. Also, he's the only unattached sexually mature male wizard for miles.

He's a bad mother--shut yo mouth!

I'm just talkin' bout Shacklebolt!

(seriously. the fact he's not being played by Samuel L Jackson saddens me.)

He's the black (afro-bristish sounds weird) Auror, right? Basically the Order of the Phoenix's plant inside the Auror office. I don't remember his role in HBP, but that was his role in the prior book.

the more people answer this question, the more I feel like I have apparently no recollection of this character existing whatsoever.

hrrr.

He was part of the advance guard that came to get Harry in OoTP, and was spearheading the Ministry's hunt for Sirius, which... yeah, well. He's not tied in with Sirius/Lupin, you name it, which probably helps.

I totally have to reread 5 and 6, I think I flew over all sorts of details in my specificity of interest.

I vaguely recall that he's described as "Handsome" or something bland like that. Considering most of 'em are a funny-looking lot, it's a start. Bald black man with an earring, younger or middle-aged. He's only vaguely mentioned in Book 5, aside from the conversation he and Arthur Weasley have at the Ministry before Harry's hearing. The one where they're saying "Gosh, No, I Don't Know Where Sirius Black Might Be" in loud voices, then inviting himto dinner at #10 Grimmauld in murmurs. In Book #6 he's placed as the Muggle Prime Minister's personal assistant. He has hardly any lines or appearances other than that and the Advance Guard.

I figure he's younger, not fugly, and available, and in the HP universe, that's actually pretty impressive. Plus, you know, earrings equals sex to most people.

There's actually been some interesting meta-discussion on the subject of Blaise and Kingsley and the one-dimensionality of black man's sexuality in HP fic. (Not that I can remember where, right now, but I can try and find it again if you want to read it.)

M'self I agree mostly with what's been said above me with an added corollary that he's one of the few characters from the MWPP era (he's mentioned as having known James when he comes w/Lupin and the others to take Harry to 12GP; he mentions he thought Sirius would be amused by the Stubby Broadman article) who is not, you know, crazy and/or broken in some way.

This is so interesting. If you stumble upon it again, please point me to it. Does it take into account that everyone thought Blaise was white and/or a girl for a really long time and the resulting fandom explosion? Certainly, all of this makes me want to get to the chunk of Descensus where we actually get to develop Alyn Zabini's character (we've got it planned out, we're just not there).

I bumped into like 800 mentions of this character last night in fic, all for the first time ever and I was like what the hell? And none of them seem to mention what's the most compelling thing in this post -- someone who knew everyone during the MWPP era and wasn't damn involved in the drama and might, might just have a perspective resembling accuracy.

I went hunting for it, I will let you know if I am successful. And yes, it does take on the sudden volte-face/fandom explosion, and in a really *articulate* way, which is why I really wish I had memory'd it.

I *think* it's by [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail but I am not sure, and I went all the way through her journal tonight and couldn't find it. But I was doing some skimming. I left her a comment about it so I'll know one way or the other pretty soon. She actually has a *lot* of literate, intelligent and *adult* meta-discussion in there, a lot of which I think you would enjoy.

She has other meditations on race and fandom as well that you might find interesting.
