first -- my flight is booked to Phoenix Rising!

Continental Airlines $223 with all fees (I could have got it cheaper, but I really need to fly non-stop or I'm deaf for days, as it is, the odds of my being able to actually hear anyone until sometime mid-day Thursday are pretty low).

Wed, May 16 07:10 AM to 09:39 AM
Newark, NJ (EWR) to New Orleans, LA (MSY)

Mon, May 21 02:40 PM to 06:51 PM
New Orleans, LA (MSY) to Newark, NJ (EWR)

My mom is really fascinated by this entire trip. She's unclear about why there would be a Harry Potter conference, but thinks it sounds like fun. She had her shoulder cancer surgery thingy yesterday and it was pretty bad -- 3 hours of surgery and 3 hours of reconstruction. They got it all though and she should be fine, but she's out of work on dissability now for three weeks and she's bored. I suggested (in one of those brilliant moments of not thinking) that she should learn to use the Internet. Wonder how long until she starts reading Snarry, righto?

My father, meanwhile, having dawdled over the proofs of his bible for months (since there are lots of new people -- short summary: My father has written his own version of the bible and is self-publishing it. Whatever questions you have, my answer is probably, "I don't know!" although you're welcome to ask), finally submitted the final version and the physical object should be available for purchase in about 3 weeks. Religion is very complicated around here, kids. For the record, I try to stay as far away from this wacky project as I can, but it's the quickest way to get across "no, really, my family is actually weird" to people.

I used my cobalt blue glass bottles for the first time today. I thought it would only be funny to me. No, it's funny. Maybe, if I didn't habitually move the way I do and extend my pinky like I'm drinking tea it would be less funny, but probably not. Hillarious. Well cool, I get a giggle with dinner instead of bread.

I, meanwhile, am now going to have a watermelon ice for dinner and start the next chapter of Descensus.

Taking Sudafed/generics for takeoff and landing helps somewhat with the ear problems, if you don't do that already.

Unfortunately Sudafed and pretty much all related drugs that are actually effective contain things I can't have because of my heart thing. I buy earplanes and pray mainly.

Oh, sod, forgot about that part. sorry. Best of luck then. Heat can also help once you've landed; hot showers/compresses.

Quite all right, it's really the only consistent pain in the ass thing with it.

One of the reasons I am arriving so early (the first event is a pre-party that night, and I'll be in the hotel by 10am) is allowing for enough recovery time that I may be able to socialize "normally"

All that class of stimulants actually act as tranquilizers on me, so I forget, despite having several friends with heart issues or other sensitivities. I knew they put me to sleep, but even I was a litle surprised when my doc made me quit caffeine because she was worrried about my heart and high pulse rate - and my pulse went up a lot as a result. Yay for self-medicating. It is annoying having to explain it to each new doctor though- the OT I just saw wanted to take me off caffeine for sleep reasons, and I offered to demonstrate how two cups of expresso cause me to fall asleep.

Wow, I used to date a guy, like 15 years, ago with that exact problem.

It's not terribly unusual; many people with ADHD/ADD are like this. It's why you can give Ritalin, which is speed, to hyperactive kids and they calm down. We're backwards.

Where do the watermelon ice come from?

Marino's Italian Ice. Some bodegas have them, and sometimes you can find six packs at the supermarket. I tseems to be the least common flavour though.

I cannot wait until the next HP event. I don't know if it will be Phoenix Rising or Prophecy for me, but I'm so going to at least one of them.

Do you think your mom might get into the whole HP thing and want to come along. I met so many amazingly cool mother-daughter teams at Lumos!

My family is really complicated and strange, and my mom has a hard time with sci-fi and fantasy, believing she's not clever enough to follow it. She read the first HP book and enjoyed it but was too busy to read the rest, which I should perhaps bring her while she's stuck at home. While I think most of the people who know me who have met her would think the idea absurd, they also know she's funny and unpredictable and calls me when famous porn stars come into the shop where she works. So, like most things with my family -- it's certainly possible.

I absolutely think you should bring them to her. Aside from the whole boredom issue, it'll be a new conversational topic/diversion at family gatherings. Also, with the new openness you've shown lately, she may see this as a chance to bond with you in a format you can respond to without the usual angst. I can actually imagine her getting dressed up for 'a night out' going to see the next movie with you.

OMG wow - that is an awesome price for Continental, and non-stop at that. I haven't decided if I'm going to PR yet, and probably won't until January. I live close enough, and have family and friends who live in New Orleans, so the only thing I am worried about is the registrations being all taken. But I look at it this way - if it is filled up before I get mine, then I wasn't meant to go, and if it isn't, and everything works out the way I want it to, then it is meant to be. It would be a shame to be so near and not go :-)

I know there'are close to 300 right now and there are room for 1000. I suspect you'll still be fine in Janaury, although not much after.

Thanks for the information! It seems like registration must be going slow - I would have expected there to be many more siged up by now; I guess perhaps many people wait to register.

I think it goes in fluries at various points. Life is slow right now. Peopel are coming back from Lumos and assessing their budgets, and there are three big events next year to choose from. I am sure it will fill up, but I don't expect the big rush until December.

RM, how did you manage that? I fly with Southwest and even then I usually can't get anything under 300...then again NY is much bigger than Salt Lake so that may be the reason right there?

I have no idea! i think it's because it's so far in advance. also, we have three airports, which is a real advantage. SLC is a hub for something though, yes? Hell, maybe Southwest, I've no idea. One of my oldest friends lives out there, but I'll spare you the game of "everyone in your city must know everyone".

That's gotta be it.

Yep, SLC is the hub for the South West (the region, not the airline LOLZ) because when you think of the Rocky Mountains, its proximity to California, Vegas and Mexico, lots of flights go through here. So our airport is really an international airport, too.

No, no, don't spare! I like that game. If s/he works in the theatre here I may well know him/her. The SLC theatre community is very small and tight knit.

Glad to read that your mom came through her surgery OK.

Interesting that your father is writing/publishing his own version of the bible. What prompted him to do so? Just curious.

Susan

Who knows. I refer to the family religious mania -- it seems to be how our crazy comes out.

My dad is the youngest of 4 and as akid they always made him go to church on Sunday, but never said which, so he went to lots of different ones. When I was growing up he seemed to change religious obsessions every couple of years. He had a guru and then a swami and then Theosophy meetings and so on and so forth. Now he writes poetry in the voice of Jesus. I have no idea.
