Done. yay. Feels like it's almost entirely about books no one has really read, but hey, cool.

Maybe you can help me. A friend recommended a particular sci-fi/fantasy author to me but I cannot remember her name. He referred to her work as being Jane Austen crossed with sci-fi. I feel like her (last) name started with an R. All of which I know is very helpful. Any clue?

My only guess is Naomi Novik because of her series that is essentially the Napoleanic Wars with dragons.

I think he was referring to it as being Jane Austen crossed with sci-fi as a way to tell me it was romantic sci-fi. But I'll look into Novik's work.

Hrmmm no idea. And Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint gest described as Georgette Heyer crossed with fantasy, but I'm sure that's not what you're thinking of either. Hrrrr.

well, I'll ask him when I see him and I'll let you know and you can tell me if it makes ANY sense. Incidentally, if I were to read Novik's books, is there an order in which I should be reading them?

Yeah, it's a trilogy, but I haven't read them yet, so I don't recall what order they go in. It'll say somewhere on the Amazon site though.

Yay for the Friesner books, of course, and yay also for Battle Royale. One thing I found interesting was the way the movie changed the reasons why these "competitions" were being held. It was just as interesting as the book's reasons, yet changed everything.

Also, your description of Winterlong made me think of another "alternate history" book, though not apocalyptic. Have you ever read Timequest by Ray Faraday Nelson? The main character is William Blake's wife, and one of my favorite parts is a world where Cleopatra defeated the Romans, making Egyptian culture the basis for the western world.

Wuh-oh. I just realized you spelled it Battle Royal in the article. It's "Royale".
