Yay for the Friesner books, of course, and yay also for Battle Royale. One thing I found interesting was the way the movie changed the reasons why these "competitions" were being held. It was just as interesting as the book's reasons, yet changed everything.

Also, your description of Winterlong made me think of another "alternate history" book, though not apocalyptic. Have you ever read Timequest by Ray Faraday Nelson? The main character is William Blake's wife, and one of my favorite parts is a world where Cleopatra defeated the Romans, making Egyptian culture the basis for the western world.
