This is awful and more or less what I suspected.

I don't know what I am going to do yet, but seriously. Anyone trying to use LJ for profit is going against the grain of sanity. LJ is not myspace, fools.

I have no problem with attempts at profit. It is a business, and we have to acknowledge that.

What I do have a problem with is that this clearly wasn't a "good intentions gone awry" thing. This was "shit! IPO, let's nuke everything we can find that might upset people -- and then aside from using WfI's completely fucked list, they added 100 random groups of their own. They went out looking, not for pedophils, but legit LJ users to sacrifice to this cause without warning and then intentionally did it when they thought no one would notice.

As a former abuse officer for a Big Internet Presence, I really wish LJ would get a real Net lawyer and some people who know how to handle this crap, revise their ToS, and get their shit together.

I do not wish this enough to start running an imitation LJ server off our servers, because the whole reason people "stick" (for Internet values of "sticky") with LJ is because their friends are here. Until somebody solves that technical hurdle - which I hope they do soon - I am too lazy to have to read things on eight different services. And I am too sick to run an Abuse department myself, even a little one. I remind myself of this because it is hard to resist the urge to do so sometimes...

I remember noticing that LJ's homepage listed something like 13 007 xxx journals/communities round just before all this this started, and it's 13 072 xxx. I can't believe that's a coincidence or reflects the average rate of growth.

I expect a lot of that is people diversifying their journals, hoping that by not having all their eggs in one basket, one is more likely to keep at least some of the eggs. Now I'm wondering how many of them as 'protest' LJs, and hoping that this flood of journals created are non-paying accounts.
