Just watched two hours of Firefly.

Why is it so good?

And where is the Mal/Simon slash?

ETA: Where is the good Mal/Simon written by people who aren't writing "and then, like OMG, they have this totally great date so now they are thinking about when they can totally see each other again."

NO.

Please, decent plots, decent voices and an interest in the culture of the universe which means the trapped on a ship together factor, the moral codes of the larger society, the class differences between the characters etc.

Yes, I've only seen two episodes.

It only gets better too. I'm amazing by it, it's definitely Whedon's best work, and it has spawned a truly amazing amount of slash of all sorts. OTOH, I cannot recommend enough against seeing Serenity, it very badly did not work.

Firefly is also the only place where slash truly transformed (or perhaps warped is a vastly better word) my watching of the show. I read some impressively well written River/Simon slash after watching the episode Safe and it changed how I saw the two of them - definitely wrongness.

I have found that Serenity works better on the small screen. Whendon is better at shooting for small wide screen rather than large wide screen.

Just my thoughts, your mileage may vary.

And my roomie found Buffyverse/Firefly crossover. Imagine Mal and Spike on the bridge.

I love "Firefly." I have never liked any other Joss Whedon thing, but I like that show. I never saw it until a friend brought the DVD set over last year and the first couple of eps got me so hooked I stayed up all night to watch every episode in one go.

It has a lot of elements that appeal to me personally, which is definitely part of my love for the show. But also, one thing I don't like about Whedon is that he usually NEVER misses a chance to go for the cheap, stupid, unwashed laugh, along with the cheap, stupid, unwaashed plot, and "Firefly" is more intelligent and sophisticated than his other shows. Still a few dumb laughs, but I can overlook them.

I didn't like "Serenity," it's just not as good as the show.

I absolutely agree. It was ultraviolent, and also largely dropped the "Western in space" conceit of the show which I had enjoyed.

That's a good point. I loved the "Western in Space" angle, not only because that's one of the elements that resonated with me, but also because it was subtle and very very well done... it didn't overwhelm the show. "Serenity" was a bad SF/Action film a la "Event Horizon."

I'm one of the few who actually loved Firefly as it aired on tv. It still makes me sad that Fox didn't give it more time.

FWIW, I also love Serenity. I think people are mad at Joss for doing typical Joss things in that movie. Or maybe I just love another opportunity to enjoy those characters.

A lot of it has strange emotional echoes of the Civil War, which I love. Serenity is also excellent, and did a commendable job of bowtying years of plot into two hours.

Yeah, so far (and again I've only seem two episodes) I really feel like they are addressing everything, not my inuendo, but by its passing presence, which I love as these aren't plot points, but just life in close quarters.

Yup. I only managed to make it through 2.5 hours as Patty and I were exhausted, but I think Simon is probably the guy I identify with and Mal I respect even if I think he's a bit of a dolt. Certainly, I feel some weird deep compassion for him, as idealism has screwed his sorry ass over.

Oh, enjoy! I'm always happy when someone discovers the love that is Firefly.

I second the popular opinion that Serenity the Movie doesn't really do a whole lot for me, but Firefly the show manages the ensemble cast with glorious fun and skill. There is literally NO CHARACTER of the nine I wouldn't write fic for.

Anyway, do you remember hearing the way gene Roddenberry described Star trek to the TV stations as a Wagon train to the stars? Well, doesnt FireFly remind you of the way he described Star trek was supposed to be?

Whedon reportedly was inspired to create Firefly in part by having read Killer Angels - a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg. So perhaps not so strange that you see the resemblance.
