And seriously? That article makes my name look normal.

Date: 2008-03-11 05:12 pm (UTC)Admittedly it isn't commonly used as a man's name anymore, but still. Hillary. Joyce. Men were named these things. This is much less weird then say, Lemon Jello.

Date: 2008-03-11 05:12 pm (UTC)I found the part about dads no longer having much input into naming their children. Which I just find so odd since more and more men are supposedly in the delivery room, being the stay at home parent and all that jazz.
I know that my Dad told the public health nurse my middle name was MARINE. lol So all my public health records have that on them. It just makes me laugh and reflects his absolute crappy spelling skills.

Date: 2008-03-11 09:28 pm (UTC)I always wondered if my sister would ditch it the minute she got married but she didn't; I think it's harder to give up names you've defended your whole life.

Date: 2008-03-11 10:49 pm (UTC)Also, I am familiar with being the disapproving woman -- V. and I had an ongoing argument about naming our (future) daughters Ace and Scout. (Ace, as it turns out, would have been for a Dr. Who Companion, which, I might have softened a little, only he was morally opposed to Rose, which is a name I actually like.)
In related news, I think one of Paula Yates' daughters (Fifi Trixibelle?) has spoken publicly on the subject of "please don't name your children stupid things."
In conclusion, I'd be interested in a study that tracked what people with common names do re: their kids. I share a first name with probably every fourth girl born between 1965 and 1985, and I'm not passing it on to my kids (if I ever have any).
