Just listened to the Torchwood audiobook In the Shadows and man, was that ridiculous and satisfying.

But then! Someone had to go and link me to this: http://tinyurl.com/l8u2nu which arguably contains implied spoilers for Children of Earth that are really fucking distressing even if I've been saying for months that Ianto is not going to die and the rumour mongering is just the usual fan wank and drama.

Really, it's so ridiculous. Hello, I went through the Snape thing. I was ready for that. I'm only bummed his death wasn't more epic (snake bubble to the head? really?). But Ianto! Not my favorite character, but the one it would definitely break my heart to see go. I'd analyze that for you all, but it's so hardly necessary I'd like to pretend to keep my dignity on the subject, but NOW I'M REALLY FUCKING FREAKED. And can't, apparently, stop listening to really depressing stuff on last.fm.

Trauma!

I do think it is extraordinary to release a soundtrack with these titles on. Unless they aren't as clear cut as all that. I freaked when I read them, and all along I haven't trusted RTD as he is very open about not caring about fans, and never listening to them, and that he loves to kill off characters. However I think he has been pushed into decisions before for more commercial reasons (makes me laugh so much when he does the behind the scenes and pretends it's all creative, I loved Burn Gorman so much for actually stating the obvious about Martha being shoehorned in, when RTD sat there and went on about how it was always meant to be etc)

Anyhow deviating, but I think my point is that if it doesn't make commercial sense, (surely it doesn't, god knows I have a lot of gay friends who watch for the Jack/Ianto, and are not fannish, casual viewers but won't bother with the Jack/Gwen show at all, they don't watch Dr Who), then I wonder if it's more likely to be an RTD style Deus ex Machina? Please not the glove though.

Well, I like Ianto, but couldn't there be another male love interest for Jack after Ianto?

I mean, even if Jack and Gwen are the last two standing, there's no guarantee they'd ever be a couple on the program.

Maybe Gwen will get a girlfriend. :)

That's funny because i literally just said that on another comment, that it could work to have another male love interest, but it feels a bit redundant, and I don't know, I think it may be a deal breaker for a lot of people. I know that from the first I watched it for Ianto, despite turning it on for Jack after loving him in DW. Gosh they can do whatever they want, I don't have to watch, and I guess it remains to be seen whether it has a tangible effect.

Yes, a lot of people say that. But people still watch Doctor Who even if they ship the Doctor with a previous companion (or just liked the companion quite a bit). Slash fandom aside, I think most people watch Torchwood for Jack.

I like all of the characters, and was sad to lose Tosh and Owen, but I'll watch as long as Jack's there.

Might even watch a spinoff set somewhere else, like Torchwood 4, if they ever find it. :)

I think DW is different as the majority of the audience comes from family viewing. I didn't watch a few seasons of it due to not liking the Doctor and I know a lot felt the same, the viewing figures plummeted and it died. It did take them 20 years to get back, but they could still lose it if the new Doctor doesn't work out. (By the way, I don't care who he is with as I have never seen the Dr as a sexual person anyhow, too much nostalgia from childhood viewing.) Also they had to lose Martha, that didn't work, I think Catherine Tate was brilliant, but I'm sure it was also realising that they needed high profile, people had watched precisely because they knew Billie Piper, and she worked out well.

So I guess for me if Ianto went it would have to be someone special, an Eccleston rather than a McCoy, otherwise I won't bother and I definitely won't watch the Jack/Gwen show.

Yes, I do watch Doctor Who no matter who the Doctor or companions are, though of course I do like some better than others.

I don't think Torchwood would be the Jack/Gwen show. That made the X-Files JUMP THE SHARK. :D

I ship everyone, really, but fic makes things possible no matter what happens with a show, so I don't worry too much about it.

Buffy fan here. We're used to disappointment.

Well it happened for me with the X files, God knows I now don't get why I loved it so much. Anyhow I had no problems about Mulder/Scully, my problem was when Mulder left, no matter how good people said RP was, I could not get into it at all, so only watched if Mulder was in it. Mind you by the time he left I literally knew no one who was still watching, it went on too long. As for the film, well God help me, they were so tired the poor dears needed to lie down in a dark room, it really was too much effort.

I've only seen a few Buffys, I rather feel like I'm missing something when I watch that, it's fun, but I don't see what the fans see.

Oh yeah, I much preferred the X-Files with Mulder over Doggett, but I still watched. And I shipped Mulder and Scully in an UST-tastic way. Mulder wasn't dead, though... I was sure he'd be back. And I read fic with loads of Mulder in anyway, so on some level, what was going on in canon didn't mess with my fanon. I would have watched for Scully had Mulder been killed off. I liked the plots and the mytharc in general. Sometimes the storylines didn't work for me, but I didn't ditch the show over them.

The film SUCKED. :D (Clarifying: The second film.)

Re: TW S4, should it come - I want new team members (additional ones, to join Ianto and Gwen) for more fic possibilities!

Oh yes I meant the second film, I like the first one a lot. The second one was painfully bad, not just due to the lethargy, but I found it homophobic as well. (could not believe the joke about gay marriage and the whole gay=paedophile thing, awful. Anyhow that really is segueing big time.

I definitely want more new team members in S4, with gwen and Ianto. I can't see the pregnancy lasting, that is unless Rhys is a goner.

I feel the same way about the pregnancy. And Rhys. But I'm not really a fan of domestic drama stuff... I want sexy sci-fi and not sure how a baby will fit into this show.

Though re: Ianto's fate... Owen was brought back (not quite the same, but still). And Rhys was brought back when the team re-opened the Rift.

So death may not be permanent. Hey, it's Torchwood! They might milk the emotion and then do some reversal. Ianto could fake his death to outwit the enemy AND THE AUDIENCE, LOL. Lots of stuff could happen.

I don't want a baby in there either, although I guess they could palm it off and we only hear about it off screen. I think your theory is probably right. Some kind of Spooks like faking of his death maybe. I think they should give him a spin off show, so he fakes his death, then goes off to take over Torchwood 4 with his special skills and we have a spin off with potential crossover episodes. Also TW4 totally has to be filmed at Port Merion, then you could even allude to the Prisoner and make it as surreal as that was. It would be such a great location for them, I am surprised they have never used it.
