In the craptastic chaos that was my day, i spent some time iin the supermarket with my food diary and read labels on packages I usually don't. Basically, if I eat less than 10 grams of fat a day, I'm fine. If I eat more, trouble starts. this, at least is my theory. So I bought some other lean foods, and will try them over the next week. If I'm right this at least solves a lot logistically. It also means perhaps I will brave fat-free sourcream.

If you can stand it, low fat sour cream is far superior to fat-free. In fact, it's quite good.

If fat is the issue, that narrows down the possibile diagnoses, too.

Fat is a common problem for folks with a couple of gut problems, and a likely suspect. You had a general blood test workup and it came out clean, right? So we're reasonably sure it's not a gallbladder thing? (Also, gallbladder would probably put you in lots more pain.) IBS sounds pretty likely at this point, especially if the fat thing seems to work.

Not that I would wish IBS on anyone, but better that than severe IBD or Crohn's, and IBS is manageable. Sometimes being able to name, identify, and understand the demons is a big relief.

They didn't do a full blood workup. But they asked me and asked me things looking for a gallbladder problem and absolutely couldn't find one (no vomitting, not more than two days of fever at the beginning of this, no pain) so it's never been on the list of susected things really.

Damn. Well, a strategy that is working is an awfully good start. Are you able to get enough calories in to have enough energy consistently?

I've finally managed to be able to do that in the last two weeks; I've put back on most of the weight I lost when this first happened (which was a significant amount). Now it's just an effort to make those calories increasingly meaningful.

Ugh. I lost weight from some bad stomach flu this year and even being heavy in the first place it was a little much to deal with; I can only imagine how hard it must be physically on people who are pretty small in the first place. Yay keeping it on!

Don't do the fat free sour cream!!!! Just say no! Cut out all other fat substances or don't eat sour cream. It just isn't worth it. Just my humble (yet adamant) opinion.
