Completely unrelated, but just as much up my nose: Ugh, I hate when gender norms amongst reenactors bite me. I'm just trying to avoid having to make my own breeches, but a woman? in breeches? horror! I may have to make my own. Am annoyed.

That's the thing - I DID buy into it. As a male oyu ahve no choice but to buy into it - it is fed to you in every way possible from well meaning but misguided family, mass media, sociological norms and history.

I grew out of it. I grew out of it based on being educated, the journey of self knowledge, and having good friends like RM who showed me the error of the way I was going.

It is possible to grow out of it, but it takes brains, fortitude, and a willingness to make that change in order to succeed.
