Why haven't I heard anything about this?
Does it even have an American release date scheduled yet?

ETA: Of course, since I rarely see films in general release anymore, I rarely see previews anymore. Duh.

I saw a preview for it before The Illusionist, I think? Something I saw recently, anyway. I have this vague feeling it's supposed to be a winter movie, but I could be wrong on that one.

Well don't blame me if you haven't heard about it. ;)

It was supposed to come out this fall, but was moved to Christmas, which is probably good news about its quality. I know [livejournal.com profile] trailer_spot posted at least one trailer about a month or so ago; looks good.

I think it was reviewed about a year or so ago by Ebert and Roeper on one of their film festival shows. You might be able to find their review somewhere.

Let me expand.

The book is spectacular, though I understand that the movie is pretty much not the book. The book gave me the same feel as Paul Auster's In the Country of Last Things (which, I think, you introduced me to), although perhaps because they were both so incredibly dystopic.

I am not usually a visual person, and for the most part books give me a sense of plot and place but I very rarely remember a book as if it were a movie. This is not the case with this book. I have a very strong sense of having watched the action, and will therefore probably not see the movie.

My reaction after seeing the trailer was not remotely positive, I'll repost it here:

If Children of Men is at all like its trailer, it should likely win an award for most vilely sexist film of the year. In addition to the fact that I've only seen the "humanity has stopped being able to reproduce" plot used by impressively sexist male authors like Frank Herbert, the trailer talks solely about female infertility to the extent that one would assume that women spontaneously undergo pathenogenesis. Moreover, the plot revolves around saving the one remaining pregnant teen by smuggling her into some secret research project where she will be save and the reasons for her fertility will be studied. All of the actors are white, except for the young woman, who is not only black, but despite being show in almost half the trailer was not given a single line of dialog. My loathing for this movie already knows no bounds.
