request for recs
Feb. 24th, 2004 08:59 amI need a cheap, reliable, no drama hosting service that will makes things as uncomplex as possible for me in terms of registering a domain name and allowing me to update my site via FTP whenever, and in terms of not dinging me on transfer fees. I Google, and 8-billion things come up, and it's too much for my poor little brain.

Date: 2004-02-24 12:54 pm (UTC)I've a bit of a love-hate relationship with http://www.edatarack.com.
When I signed on, it was $1.95/month for the smallest package, not including domain registration. The big seling points for me were:
* It was cheap
* It housed 300 Mb of space and had a 5 Gb trabsfer limit
* Full power to set up FTP access,
* 20+ POP-mail acounts with unlimited aliasing,
* Perl, PhP and MySQL support,
* Linux host with Apache server,
Since the MyDoom thing and the introduction of an upgraded server, they've upped it to $3.95/month, but you get
* 500 Mb of space and 10 Gb transfer
* Unlimited PPO-mail accounts,
* Support for 5 MySQL databases,
* subdomain housing
You can find their current specs and costs at http://www.edatarack.com/hosting.html.
The biggest drawback I've found ot them is that they are a lot like a Greek restaurant--awesome product but abrupt and sometimes hostile service. Thankfully, I've only had to email (they don't have a voice-support division) customer-service two or three times.

Date: 2004-02-24 09:21 pm (UTC)Q. Any chance you can create a status link off the edataracks.com site tht will serve to inform people of what's going on when the domain names registered with you are unavailable.
Geoectomy.net is down, and I'm nto getting any of my mail, but I don't know why, how long it'll be down, or whats being done about it.
A simple link to the one page that always loads--www.edataracks.com would probably save you folks a whole lot of help requests...
A. Here is the email that was sent to you on Monday, October 20th concerning the migration of your server to the new network. We dont need a status link as this email tells you all about your server and the downtime. A link would cause the other 5000 customers not effected by this change to flood us with requests.
NETWORK MIGRATION NOTICE – PLEASE READ
If you are receiving this email notice it means that your domain name hosting account is on one of our servers that will be migrated to a our new network provider within the next 24-hours. The physical migration will commence at approximately 3pm CST on Tuesday October 21st 2003.
Please be aware that during the migration period your site will be off-line as well as for up to 24-72 hours for DNS to fully propagate across the entire Internet to the new network address. This migration is necessary due to recent issues with our current network provider, which has caused unplanned and unexpected network outages during the month of September 2003.
We are migrating your accounts to a new Tier 1 network provider to insure that unexpected network outages do not continue to cause you to be further inconvenienced in the future. This move will also increase the speed and response times of your web sites availability, email, and FTP services. We apologize for the inconvenience and will work as hard as we can to get your sites back on-line ASAP after the move.
During this time PLEASE do not submit Help Desk Support tickets for site unavailable and email services being down. PLEASE DO NOT make any changes to your account in any way. Below you will find your new Control Panel login address link that you will use once your account has been migrated to the new network. The old link that you were originally sent will no longer be usable.
New Control Panel Link: https://209.218.166.47:8443
New DNS:
HOST3A.DNSWITHUS.NET

Thank you,

Q. Can you confirm that Extended Server Side Includes (XSSI) on the Apache Web Server are NOT enabled?
I've been trying ot get some going and even the most basic XSSI commands are giving me problems. I couldn't find documentation to suggest whether it was enabled or not on these servers.
A. SSI has been enabled on your site on the server. It was enabled when your account was setup and I just went into your account and saw the SSI enabled, in your control panel under hosting, you can scroll down and see the SSI box checked.
Q. Greetings;
I was one of the clients on Friday's crashed server. I've gone through the control panel and set up the email accounts again, but I now seem to have difficulty accessing these accounts via Eudora.
The error message I am getting, through Eudora, is:
Logging into POP Server CAPA [date]
SSL Negotiation Failed: You have configured this personality/protocol to reject any exchange key lengths below 0. , But the negotiated exchange key length is -1 Hence this established secure channel is unacceptable.
Connection will be dropped.
Cause (-6992)
I receive this message for all established acounts. I have not changed the Eudora settings from the way they were before the crash.
Can you suggest where else I might look to find out how to make this error go away, so I can actually receive my email?
--Jason
A. I tried to setup an account for me bob@geoectomy.net. I tried to setup the account in Eudora and got the same error as you, but I set it up in Outlook and it worked fine. This has something to do with Eudora. Go to their homepage at eudora.com and find out what that error means as it is a Eudora error as it can be setup in Outlook so it is not the smtp on the server.

Date: 2004-02-24 09:32 pm (UTC)Oh my.
I'm rather disturbed by this on a few levels.
I never expected my communications with the company to be made public, and certainly not in an unrelated person's journal... Would you mind terribly deleting this thread, starting with my own commentary?
My apologies for the clutter. I honestly had no idea that this would result of my recommendation.

Date: 2004-02-24 09:56 pm (UTC)Actually, would you mind terribly leaving it up for a bit, if you haven't already deleted it.
I think I'd like to bring this to their attentionto see if I can get an explanation for why they felt it was okay to publish my exchanges with them. To that end, the link to the thread might be useful.
My apologies again, for the clutter.
Given what's happened here, I'm not sure I can recommend them anymore. If you're looking for a no-drama host, this whole thread kind of takes them out of the criteria.

Date: 2004-02-25 04:45 pm (UTC)It is not our intention to violate any ones privacy. There is no personal or account access information posted other than the actual dialog between you and our support member. However with so many posted reviews of companies that may be true, not true, and or greatly exaggerated in nature, there are always two sides and we do not see any dialog from our support person that would lead me to believe that you were treated hostile. In fact what we do see are your tickets being answered accurately and professionally.
Once again we apologize but do feel that if you are going to post on a public Internet forum that a company is abrupt and hostile in their communications with you then both sides of the dialog should be addressed and viewed publicly as well to qualify / defend both sides of a posted review of service. Normally dialog would not be posted outside of our help desk but when you post something publicly about a companies character and or file a complaint then transcripts can and will be made public via postal mail or Internet in response to consumer complaints as well as in a public forum in which the business relationship and dealings have been made public.

Date: 2004-02-25 05:37 pm (UTC)- Despite the vaguely mixed review from your customer, I was extremelly close to using your service anyway, as you do have the features I desire. However, your posting here has been weird and inappropriate, and made me choose not to go with your service. Had you refuted his statements with a clear discussion of the situation, and a request to quote from the private communication, this would not have been an issue for me.
- It has always been considered a grave violation of Internet ettiquette to post private emails in public spaces, without obtaining prior consent from the originator of the content, regardless of the lack, or not, of "sensitive" information in the communication in question.
- Your handling of this situation has violated both basic business and Internet ettiquette, and shows a profound lack of understanding of the nature of public relations.
- Once again, this is a request for you to take your amateurish, unprofessional behavior out of my journal. All further communication from you will be deleted without comment.
