  • Today started with me accidentally snapping my favorite pair of glasses in half.

  • Now I am trying to figure out what to wear to the CoE thing today that DWNY is going.

  • Last night Patty and I saw Public Enemies, which I thought was a film that had no idea what story it wanted to tell and examined too many aspects of the story in deeply curosry ways so that they were disturbing but without viewpoint. That said, the use of music in it was spectacular (what was the guitar track that's also used in the previews? so great!); the performances were all amazing (although I wish the actors had been given more to do, and there's something hilarious about Billy Cruddup playing Hoover); I always forget how much I enjoy that mid-century patrician accent you barely hear anymore that was all over this film; and people, the aesthetic brilliance of the film (oh the suits!) was amazing. So I had fun, and I'm glad we went and romantic dinner afterwards didn't hurt either.

  • What hurt? CoE preview at the movies!

  • I find all the fan protests to be really uncomfortable and many of them I find to be really disrespectful/obnoxious as an artist myself. But I gotta say, don't care how crazy it is, the people leaving flowers at the Torchwood tourist office site? Kinda sweet.

  • I can't believe I snapped my fucking glasses in half!

I think protests are ok if they are tasteful and not nasty. For instance, mailing a coffee bean or wearing a t-shirt asking for Ianto's return is not disrespectful. Some of the stuff i've seen about people being rude to RTD at conventions, however, is.
If people need to deal with this by forming a protest group then it's absolutely fine, but if it's a bunch of things done in anger then no one is going to win.The anti-Gwen sentiment that tends to prevail undermines everything they want to achieve. Do I believe protesting will actually make a difference? No. But I do think it will help people if they approach it in a positive and witty manner, befitting the character of Ianto.

    Word.

I mean, I do get how devastated peopel are. I'm a fucking mess. I also think the writers made a set of choices that were not the only choices but do make absolute sense and delivered us a stellar product or the sort people will be talking about for years to come. and I'd love to see where they go next.

I'm chill with the coffee bean thing (although as an American, it's a bit "teabagging the White House" -- and that's just so cringe-worthy) and so forth, but as you say -- the harrassing creatives, and the excuse for random misogyny is really, really where I lose my patience.

Agreed. I'd love to play along with some of it, but 90% of it is as much about directing anger at Gwen as it is showing support for Ianto, and I can't go there. Aside from the fact that it's no character's fault, if they're right, and RTD really does have his head so far up Gwen's posterior, you think ripping on her while asking to get Ianto back is going to HELP?

In the end, it's still a fiscal and logistical decision. Will the BBC find the ratings good enough to fund it and also HAVE funding? (the major downside to taxpayer funded television, commercial TV finds a way if there's ratings, taxpayer funding has more obligations to balance). Will RTD remain involved from LA and/or hand it off to people in Wales to keep it going? If they could write Ianto back in, would GDL come back or will he have something else obligating him by then? And JB's schedule is notoriously full. It's about both characters together, not just one.
So many moving pieces, and that's all forgetting the world that was left behind for the show after CoE ended. It would be a radically altered world, or one in complete denial, and I'm not sure I could enjoy either.

Frankly, even though I'm still in the bargaining stage of grief (GIVE me the tired cliche, bring him back with crappy handwaving, damnit, what else is the Doctor for!?), in my moments of lucidity, I do feel it's probably for the best that it ends now. We can't undo CoE. Best I can hope for is denial, and the sad part was - as you've said - they acted the hell out of it, so it's not fair to them creatively to ignore it completely.

Really?! I'm not really a Gwen fan, but I thought her character got the respect it deserved in this go and she finally became the strong, intelligent woman she was always supposed to be. I'm honestly still mind-boggled at all the hate for this series. I haven't been reading too much in the comms, although I did just see someone get some nasty responses over on [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood when s/he suggested a series 4 petition, and I've seen some general bitching on [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt, but I just don't get how fans of the show can look at this week and think it was anything short of amazing. So your character died; mine did too, but IT WAS GOOD TELEVISION.

I just feel kind of sad at all these earnest protests going because I really don't think they'll make a stroke of difference - if RTD does end up bringing Ianto back, it'll be because he always intended to, not for any other reason. Fair enough if people want to do something for themselves or for the lulz, but I really don't think people should get their hopes up for it actually making a significant difference to the decision making process.

And to be quite honest, I've been so blown away by what they've done, I kind of don't want to cheapen it, or devalue the character's arc with a reset (well, I do and I don't - the part of me that values artistic integrity and the part of me that fanpersons are currently duking that out. It's getting bloody).

Sorry to hear about about your glasses!

I found Public Enemies really interesting. On the one hand, it’s a meticulous recreation of the thirties: the clothes, the sets, the historical details; on the other hand, it’s a very twenty-first-century movie: the hand-held digital video, the depiction of violence, the naturalistic acting. (Speaking of acting, did you know David Wenham was in this as one of Dillinger’s cronies? I wouldn’t if I hadn’t stayed for the credits. Fucking chameleon.)

FYI, your post “Oh Noes! There's Gay People In My Fandom!” was linked in [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda’s LJ today, so you may experience an influx of readers.

Bloomin' eck. Flowers at the Torchwood Tourist office?

Please, if you can, link me to that photo. Pure indulgence. Call it the grieving process. I've spent many a day when filming in Cardiff drifting past that tourist office and imaging Ianto inside flicking through Men's Health magazine... with Jack underneath his desk.

    Those were the days.

I have gone a whole 10 hours without dry heaving, panicked sobs. I could use the catharsis.

    Thanks x

completely by accident I happened to choose "The Vendetta" as my book to bring with me on this trip. Written by Alston Purvis it goes into M. PUrvis' friendship with Hoover, the Dillinger hunt at Little Bohemia and finally the Biograph Theater, and the reaction of Hoover's to Purvis' notoriety. It has been a good read so far, now I'm curious to see Public Enemies.

I'm going to Cardiff next month with my friend. I wish like hell I'd gone earlier, because my visit is going to be a sad pilgrimage now, instead of joyful exploration.

Honestly, as soon as I'd stopped my stretch of hysterical crying after Day Four, leaving flowers at the tourist office was the first thing I thought of. Glad to see I'm not alone in that.

I quite liked Public Enemies - I thought it was beautifully shot, loved the soundtrack, costumes, design, etc. Depp and (French actress who played the GF - brainfail) made the movie. It didn't completely carry me away though, there were moments of boredom, so I give it an A-.

The TW protests - I have to say, I cringe when I read about people's plans for ComicCon. It's not going to make a lick of difference. I agree with comments above - if he's going to bring Ianto back, it was because he planned to all along and probably for nefarious reasons. The Writer's Tale is full of quotes about detesting online fandom opinion and how art isn't a democracy, which James Moran dittoe'd in his blog post today. I do hope RTD talks about the decision process at ComicCon though. I guess he talks about it in the Declassified, haven't watched it yet.

If I see a pic of flowers at the TW tourist office, I'll probably cry. What else is new.

I haven't seen any plans, but RTD has left the BBC and gone to Hollywood, so it certainly would make no difference, he won't give a toss.

I think campaigns and flowers are lovely if they are a positive way to direct energies. It's nice to let the BBC know (and it will be theirs to decide now) how loved the show, and Ianto are. If JB gets his way for the next season, well then Ianto could very easily be back and it would work well. Given that JB thinks it should be a few mini series exploring TW at different times. Great idea, Jack would be the constant, bring back the Victorian crew, do one about them. Bring back Gerald and Harriet, one about them. There could so easily be a mini series set before CoE, with Gwen and Ianto, or even the whole team. Would never work as a full 13 part season, not at all, but for one story, one adventure, why not? (Very Sherlock Holmes this, but that worked.)

So I guess my point is, campaigns bought Spock back, and Sherlock for that matter, and if they do follow JB's idea, well it certainly won't hurt for Ianto to be in their minds. (But not via mentally unstable people with death threats, that is a shame, but then those people exist in all fandoms I guess, and they won't like them, but know better than to take them seriously, believe me)

from James Moran is one of the most heart-breaking things I've ever seen. Because however gutted I felt about CoE - and there were things (not Ianto's death, which I felt was sweet, beautiful and dramatically powerful) which I was less than happy about - still it makes me ashamed to be part of fandom, when the creators of something so powerful can be bullied and harassed in the name of fan reaction. And we cannot say that this is not our reaction - If a clod be washed away, Europe is the less ... send not to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.
