That's interesting. Implies he's dealing with repercussions from our wrath. Good.

(for the record, he called me (and all of fandom) coward, so I have very little compunction about calling him, in response to this, liar.)

I saw that.
I suspicious, but if it means his book deal in on the line, I'm kinda happy about that.

Still, flocking his entire journal... very yellow indeed.

Or that he's not about to let what he will surely categorize as a little misunderstanding with the fangirls derail his book project.

Not that the two are necessarily unrelated. One likely sequence of events is that he has been advised to do this by his (no doubt male) agent or editor, whose awareness of the situation is precisely such a repercussion.

Yup.
I don't think he's sincere at all, but I do think this implies we're having an effect via official channels.

Oh, I don't believe him at all. But I do believe its indicative of fandom-induced pressure from his agent, publisher or BU.

The e-mail that [livejournal.com profile] shaggirl quoted from him stated that his agent felt it would be unwise to "engage fandom any further."

Which is doublespeak for "My book deal fell through."

This whole thing upsets me so much. Even though I didn't take the survey, (the links I first found were busted) I feel violated.

Yet again, some man comes into a feminine space, acting all nice, if a little (okay, a lot) clueless but asking to be educated and then interjects his issues all over the place making a mess that we're going to have to deal with. I'm sick of it.

I'm tired of my fantasies being derided and I'm tired of being marginalized. I'm tired of hollow apologies. And I'm tired of being made to feel like the bad guy when I don't want to accept the apology. I'm tired of being used to to make others feel superior and that's what he did. I'm sick of being lied to. And I'm really fed up with guys thinking they can get away with this.

I really hope he goes away, far away, and leaves us alone because besides what some of us have already done, there's not a lot else to do with the mess. We're stuck feeling used, again. Bastard.

**sigh**

I really hope he has lost his book deal.

Wow, it's like Fandom Wank turned up to the mega level. Great going on showing this turkey his comeuppance!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didnt his research precis boil down to 'people write erotic fan fic because they get off on it?' this talk of sub cortical stimulation sounds so much like nueroscience wank, as opposed to the complex personal and literary issues that folks try to explore when writing fic, in addition to the fun aspects.

Date: 2009-09-03 04:12 pm (UTC)

It actually boiled down to "people write fanfiction because they get off on it because it makes them ashamed much like men who are interested in porn featuring pre/non-op MtF transsexuals" but said like 800 times more offensive than my already offensive paraphrase of it.

I think one of bad things about this is he went into this with a set conclusion and expected the survey to back him up. And when we saw right through it and called him on it, he got all hissy and flocked everything.

It's unlikely either one of them will chance their POV, sadly.

(You don't know me, but I friended you a while back. I hope that's all right.)

Knowing of Ogas from his appearances on Grand Slam, I definitely think this apology is bunk. I made a post about it (http://galletas.dreamwidth.org/792.html), but I basically think that this is just another one of his non-apologies. For example, when he said that his Grand Slam opponent "did math like a little girl," his "apology" implied that he wasn't sorry and he wrote (http://www.gsn.com/buzz/showpost.php?p=1306595&postcount=225), "I genuinely and sincerely hope that my trash talking enhances viewer interest in Grand Slam, even if it means some people are watching just to see if I can back it up or to see me go down."

So, in my opinion, this apology and his actions are just another way for him to "enhance interest" in his upcoming book deal. He's an unmitigated asshole.

I'm suspicious of any apology, in large part because I've assumed the worst from the very start, because it was clear from almost the beginning that these two "researchers" were approaching this study from an evolutionary psychology/genetic determinism standpoint, and that sort of research seems exceptionally rife with wretchedly designed and often utterly moronic-seeming studies that seem to be constructed solely to support the prejudices and biases (typically relating to gender norms, sexual preference, and occasionally racial stereotypes) of the people carrying it out. The degree to which this mess confirms all of my prejudices about evo psych and most of the researchers in that field is quite impressive.

In any case, if these two creeps are typical of similar researchers, this experience has in no way changed their minds except about anything other than how difficult it is to work with research subjects, who they likely consider to be utterly unreasonable.
