Meanwhile, there is this appalling/interesting slideshow on Forbes.com -- "Why NOT to Marry a Career Woman."

http://www.forbes.com/2006/07/25/cx_mn_singles06_destined_misery_slide.html

I'll reserve my commentary for a bit. I want to see you all duke it out.

Completely unrelated, but just as much up my nose: Ugh, I hate when gender norms amongst reenactors bite me. I'm just trying to avoid having to make my own breeches, but a woman? in breeches? horror! I may have to make my own. Am annoyed.

Have you seen the piece on breastfeeding by Michael Jackson's rabbi?
I have company coming over, but I will try to dig it up afterward. It's quite a thing.

I just read that.

main reaction: asjfkdfjks!

America needs to grow up. I'm sick of being The Nation of Tina the Troubled Teen.

Also, my mother never, ever put me before her husband for anything, ever, at all. And we all know how I turned out. Which is to say, not too badly, but probably more on my own than anyone should be.

Having actually watched that episode of Shalom in the Home (yeah, I know...), I will say that in *that specific case* the mom was actually treating the husband as the hired wage-earner who was taking up too much space and not a husband or partner, from what they showed.

but boobs weren't sex objects until the 1920's, prior to that they were default for feeding. So, uh, get over yourselves men who can't share. Plus, what is this *merely* a birth canal crap? If you can't look at me and find me sexy unless that is *only* a pleasure hole, go find a whore and stay out of my bed.

I agree with the substance of what you're saying; I'm not sure, though, what you mean by boobs weren't sex objects until the 1920's.

Venus of Willendorf
Helen of Troy
Marie Antoinette

Boobs have been admired and enjoyed for both their beauty and utility since they were first invented.

I knew I was gonna get called on that. I was quoting the breastfeeding book, making the point that it wasn't until the GI pin-ups and formula that breasts were seen as primarily/only sex and breastfeeding as something to hide.

You're right, of course.
